I hear you brother.

If you have access to a well chlorinated swimming pool, go swimming. Otherwise, add one cup of bleach to a hot soapy bath and soak.

( stand up and shower well after to make certain you and the bath area are bleach free. Your towels and your marriage will thank you )

It works very well as a preventative when you've been exposed, and if you're showing the rash, you no doubt still have plenty of sap/allergen on your skin. That stuff is tenacious. Make sure you get your head/ face very well

If it has reached a point of blistering and oozing, pick up some domboros at the pharmacy. It's a powder you mix with saline or water and make a wet compress with a washcloth. It glazes over all of the wet stuff and dries everything up quickly.

I'm one of the lucky few. Both my dad and I never had a reaction to poison ivy but I feel for those who get that irritating rash and persistent itching from it.

I keep a huge bottle of Dawn dish detergent in my bathroom so I can shower with it after I’ve done yard work where I might encounter poison ivy. Use it every damn where. Hair, under fingernails, etc. Multiple times. The poison ivy urushiol is an oil and it takes a concerted effort to remove.

Speak to your primary doctor about getting a pack of prednisone. Helps immensely. And yeah, generally speaking, always a good practice to shower with Dawn soap and a washcloth after working outside.

Prednisone works. I'm on day 3 of my pack for poison ivy or poison oak or something.

I got it from clearing out brush and saplings to put up a few more rifle and pistol targets.

I was not allergic to anything, including poison ivy, growing up.

Now, not so much. I’m on shots and medicine

Straight bleach with a cottom ball.

Then as said above, bath tonight with bleach.

Wash with soap and water within 30 minutes if contact
Use toothpaste on it if it breaks out in skin
Chlorinated pool awning good too
In winter cut the vines and put a few drops of roundup concentrate on the cut. Will kill it.

Birds love the berries and deer eat the leaves

Anybody remember hearing about a poison ivy vaccinations back in the 90's? I wonder what happened with that. I'd pay big money to prevent that crap.

Use Dawn. It is the best at breaking down the oil.

I've never had it, but my Pops never had it until in his 40s. So, I don't take it for granted and still try to avoid it and wash as soon as I can.

Watched a video of a guy comparing urushiol, the poison oil, to good old fashion black grease.

He smeared grease on his hands and arm as an illustration then showed how easy it was to miss a spot when washing. Being real familiar with such it helped a bunch.

I get poison ivy pretty bad but started using Tecnu. Now I just don't worry about it all, walk right through it, just use the tecnu on my arms and legs before I shower. I almost never get it anymore

Don't push your luck. I had lots of childhood and later exposure to poison ivy and oak with never a reaction. Then at 45 gardening in Baton Rouge, the miserable rash began.

My reaction is annoying but much less than my wife's who usually ends up at a dermatologist getting shots.

Curious thing is that I usually spot the 3-leaves even mixed in with Virginia creeper. My wife simply cannot recognize it.

For the first 20ish years of my life my grandmother had me convinced that it was poison something or the other. I know the difference now, or....rather, that there is a difference.

Xanfel scrub really helps. It's not cheap, but don't get the generic. Doesn't work nearly as well!

Thanks all, but I am past prevention at this point.

I am good at identifying it, but I was at the end of a long morning pulling about 5000 maple trees from my flowerbeds and I wasn't paying attention when I snagged it.

Basic soap and water wasn't the answer, unfortunately.

Well, one way to at least get some relief from the itching is hot water. Put the affected part under a stream of warm water and slowly reduce the amount of cold water until is as hot as you can tolerate. You will get either a very pleasant experience or the itching will get very intense briefly, afterwards you should get about 8 hours of being itch free.

Make sure to start with warm water so you don't burn your skin. But this method will work for temporary itch reilef. Do it every 8 hours or so and it will get you through.

Just go get the shot. It will get rid of it in less than a day. Take it from someone who can get it from watching it on TV

Get the shot. Forget everything else.
