i started a topic a few months ago regarding zoysia. I've added drainage, had my yard graded, soil tested, and am ready to sod.

I had my heart set on palisades, but then a guy i know said he could get Empire Zoysia for $130 a pallet, whereas Palisades is $190 a pallet. I need 23 pallets total. 10 for the front, 13 for the back. Any reason why i couldn't do palisades in the front and Empire in the back?

You have a crew ready to help you lay?

I laid about a pallet and a half of Zoysia last year at this time. Started at 6 am. Done by 9 am, one other hand. I could hardly move for the next week.

Good luck. Stay hydrated.

I guess it all depends on how much shade you have. The empire needs 5'ish hours of sun a day. I think the palisades is even more shade tolerant.

I cant guarantee the 100% scientific accuracy, but as mentioned above I planted sod last August and my yard is fine year on. Is there a better time to plant sod? I am sure. But as long as you keep it well watered it should take.

I would do it now. You still have maybe 2 months of growing season and will help it get established. Just make sure you water it a lot.

My first house the sod was installed in October and it did fine.

When is too late to do sod? I’ve read some articles indicating winter is better since the grass is dormant anyway. But would you water? How would that work?

Well, the good news is i'm getting it from 2 different places. Thankfully, I've halped all of my buddies move houses, or gut their houses after the flood, or whatever. So i plan on cashing in those chips and have them help me. My goal is to lay the 10 pallets of Palisades on one Saturday.

Then lay the 13 pallets of Empire the following Saturday. Hopefully with 7 or 8 of us, it should go quick. half of them have no clue what they are doing so i'll have to stay on top of em.

You'll be fine with either zoysia. I'd be worried about getting it from two different places unless you know both are very trustworthy.

You should be able to do 10. I did 9 pallets of Tif with 3 other guys that didn't know what they were doing and we had to cut it out as well as lay it. Just make the ones that don't know what they are doing load and haul the wheelbarrows.

You’re fine laying it anytime as long as there’s no frost 4-6 inches below. The best weather is 60-70’s with plenty of sun shine and a ton of water and that’s why the busy season is late spring.

Plan ahead and lay the pallets out right so you don't have to wheelbarrow. Assuming access isn't a problem.

You should be fine to lay now as long as you keep water on it. There will be plenty of time before winter for it to establish.

As for which sod, it just depends on what you like and how shady it is. If it's a heavily shaded area (3-4 hours of sunlight) I'd go with Palisades or Geo. If you get at least 5-6 then Empire is definitely an option. Both are more of a medium blade. I installed Geo this past spring in my backyard. I went with it over Palisades because I prefer a finer blade.

If it's between these two, I'd spend the extra and go with Palisades.
