I remember reading a thread on here a while back about battery powered trimmers and the EGO was highly recommended by a few people here. I've been considering making the switch and I saw this combo on amazon and it seems to be a good deal.

EGO ST6151LB 15-Inch 56-Volt Lithium-ion Cordless POWERLOAD™ String Trimmer with Aluminum Telescopic Shaft & 615 CFM Blower Combo Kit with 2.5Ah Battery and Charger Included

I'm hoping someone has some experience with these. My main question, since it only comes with one 2.5 ah battery, is on the battery life. It claims 45 minutes of run time on the trimmer and 75 minutes on the blower with the fully charged 2.5 ah included battery. I shouldn't need either for near that amount of time. I'm thinking I should probably spring for another battery anyway. What would the H&G board suggest?

Also, how good is the blower? I currently use a blower attachment on my 2 stroke trimmer that claims about 500 cfm.

I have this same setup that I bought separately so I have two 2.5ah batteries.

Overall, I love them and would never go back.

The blower is fantastic. So easy just to pop the battery in and go. I’ve had gas blowers forever and this thing beats them hands down.

No issues with the trimmer either. I’ve never really tested it with super heavy overgrown brush but it handles regular home stuff like noting. And again, just pull the trigger and roll.

The only time I’ve ran the battery out was when I trimmed my 400’ shrub line then went to trim and blow around my house. Killed the battery but I knew I had two. If you have a normal sized house with normal trimming and blowing needs, you’ll have no issue. Worst case you just buy another tool and battery.

Good to hear!

Yeah that sounds like a good plan. If the one battery isn't enough I could always get another one later.

the blower is just as powerful as a gas one, and a lot quieter and lighter, even though it's not that light. If you use your blower a lot, you're going to love it.

I would encourage you to get the multi-head trimmer instead of just the trimmer. You can get more attachments for it, like an edger, pole saw, hedge trimmer, etc.
My echo gas trimmer was without a doubt more powerful than the ego trimmer, but i can still trim everything at my house, and edge, and have zero problems doing so, and i have a lot that i need to trim. usually takes me a good 10 minutes, and edging takes a good 10-15 minutes as well.

The 2.5amp battery kind of sucks. I seriously doubt you're getting 45 minutes of run time. I have the 5.0amp and i probably get 45 minutes of run time at best.
My original 5.0 amp battery quit working. It was only able to charge back up to 40% of it's capacity. EGO warranty worked great and they sent me a brand new one recently. What sucks is that battery only lasted 2 years, but it's a 4 year warranty. I also bought a chinese knockoff 5.0 amp battery for cheap on Amazon and that one outlasted the EGO brand one.

I've had my EGO blower for 6 years now. It was the first EGO product I bought, and it is fantastic.

Over the years, I've gradually added to it. Bought the hedge trimmers, a chainsaw, the string trimmer and eventually the mower when my Honda handles rusted through and broke.

I have several of the 2.5 amp batteries, a couple 5 amp ones and a 7.5 amp one that came with the mower. I've never gotten below half a charge on the mower for my yard. My wife complains about the weight of the 5 amp ones when she uses the blower, which is why I keep the 2.5 amp ones around.

But it's been great not having to deal with gasoline at all.

Thanks for the replies!

I may get a larger battery for the trimmer and use the 2.5 ah battery just for the blower.

I didn't realize they had this. I have several attachments for my current 2 stroke trimmer head and I plan to keep it around specifically for those. I just barely use them enough to justify buying a whole new set of attachments. If it ever craps out on me I may eventually go that direction.

2.5 Ah will not last long if you're using both blower and string trimmer on an above average sized property, that's my only concern. I have a 2.5, 4, and 7.5 Ah batteries. The 2.5 will cut off on my 615 CFM blower if I'm using Turbo mode for too long, but will last long enough if I do it at semi-full speed (no Turbo). It's perfect for when I just want to use the string trimmer for 10-15 minutes since it's significantly lighter than the other two batteries. I can still get by with a 4 Ah battery for the string trimmer with the added weight, and I easily swap it over to the blower when I'm done without having to worry about battery life.

I would get this if you have an EGO ecosystem already going and have extra batteries (another 2.5 Ah would suffice.) If you don't care about getting the multi-head system (edger, cultivator, pole saw, etc.) then this is an ideal kit. The Powerload head is so convenient for string that I will never go back to wrapping up my own trimmer.

I'd probably do the opposite, the blower will need a lot more juice than the trimmer. It might blow for 75 minutes at the lowest setting, but I believe it'll only last maybe 8 minutes at best at high+turbo (with the 2.5ah pack). For reference I use my 2.5ah pack on my string trimmer and I can trim two lots totaling 1.25 acres on one charge with juice to spare.

A tip about battery life (for both runtime and overall lifespan): do not overwork the cells. Discharging a cell at 1/2C will run for more than twice as long as discharging at 1C, and its lifespan will be longer as well (measured in charge cycles). That means a 5ah pack will run for more than twice as long as a 2.5ah pack at the same rate of power output, and it will live through more than twice as many charge cycles. Cost is usually less than double, improving the value further.

Always good to get experience from real users.

I'd like to comment on the runtime figures some more. I see that the times claimed of 45 minutes for the trimmer and 75 for the blower suggest that the trimmer uses more power. And this could very well be the case at their respective lowest settings. It could also be the case at their respective highest settings. However, at least in my experience and use patterns, the 2.5ah pack lasts far longer in the trimmer than it does in the blower. I think this means for my yards and my technique, I spend most time trimming at lower power ranges and more time blowing at higher power ranges. I very rarely run the trimmer wide open and I very rarely run the blower at low cfm.

YMMV

Can confirm this. I bought the blower and the 16" trimmer separately. The blower came with a 2.5AH and the trimmer came with a 4AH. The 2.5AH was good enough for how much I use the blower if I don't boost too much. But it probably wouldn't have been enough to edge also without charging. When I got the trimmer I started using the 2.5AH with the trimmer and the 4AH with the blower. Looks like its a good bit cheaper on amazon to buy them individually with the blower coming with a 2.5AH and the 15" trimmer coming with a 4AH than to buy the combo and get a 4AH battery later. I just kept my 2 stroke trimmer to run my attachments, which mostly has become my edger when i want to recut the trench a few times a season. otherwise, i edge with the ego trimmer. the auto feed on the 16" trimmer is cool.

I would agree. I was suprised how long the battery last in the trimmer, and it definitely seems like it lasts longer than on the blower, even using the blower at just the regular power. You notice real quick that using the extra boost on the blower drains the bettery a lot quicker.

Always have a spare battery, probably want two spares actually.

That's good because you aren't going to see close to that run time on the upper settings. The blower will drain that battery in under 10 minutes at full power if it doesn't go into thermal protection mode first.

Like any other electric OPE, they are good within their niche. If you only have small areas to clear then gtg, if you have a large space or patios and decks that catch a lot of debris then not so much. All OPE companies play fast and loose with numbers, the EGO blower might make 615 cfm in a labratory but in real world testing it's only slightly more forceful than an Echo PB2520 that is rated at 450 CFM with both at 170mph. The biggest difference will be run time at max power, the Echo will run at full power longer than the EGO on its lowest setting. As far as noise, the PB2520 will actually be slightly quieter.

Which one do you have. Seems like there are a few options on amazon and I could get a "replacement" 5 ah battery and another charger for about $100-120. As opposed to about $220 for the EGO OEM battery with no charger.

anyone purchased the 7.5 generic batteries off amazon?

we moved this year (lol i know..shocker) and our yard is much larger and the grass is MUCH thicker so the poor little 7.5 we have is crapping out and i'm then 'working down the chain' to the 5, 2.5..and end up with some downtime while everything is charging and in this weather, my motivation to finish drops to zero and i end up having to mow the next day as well.

a second 7.5 would be great but don't want to spend $350 to get the EGO version.

I bought this one 20 months ago.
Amazon

It lasted longer than the EGO one did, and it hasn't blown up and burned my house down yet.

I bought that exact set a few months ago and I love them. I wish I had a spare battery because it barely makes it through me trimming and blowing off when I cut the grass but if you keep it charged, I haven't had any issues.

I have the 550 cfm blower and a trimmer similar to that one. I bought the edger and blower at the same time in 2018 but the edger didn’t last more than a season of cutting, I bought the trimmer the next season. I can use one 2.5 ah battery to trim and blow my yard when the batteries are new, after about 2 years I’d have to swap batteries about half way through. My yard is .75 acres. It takes me around 25 minutes to trim and then blow all the grass off the cement. Both of my batteries are done now though. I had to buy a new off brand battery from Amazon this season because they are way cheaper than the EGO ones.

The 765 cfm blower is fantastic. Bought one earlier this year to replace my Husqvarna gas blower that was getting up in age.
