I had mine replaced a couple months ago since my original unit was pushing 27 years old. I got a Trane 4 ton 16 Seer unit and for them to pull the old stuff out, replace it with the new unit and put in a new plenum and starting collars to tie in the existing duct work came to $6500.

The used a real metal plenum and not that fiberboard crap.

I had two units replaced a couple of years ago. Only replaced the inside and outside units, not the piping and wiring between them.
Cost me $8600 for 2 2.5 ton 14 Seer Trane units. Have worked great since installed.

related question -

Generally speaking, how much of a total price drop would be expected for the same work to replace the complete HVAC in December vs July?

any experiences with seeing the price difference?

Had just installed a complete system in my guest house. Was quoted $8100. That was duct work too! I installed the system and had a HVAC friend hook up the system. 16 Seer, 2.5 ton Ruud system. Total cost was $3500.

I legit got a quote from a contractor last week for 43,000.

He keeps blaming it on his software etc. but I just don't get it. He quoted me 24K last year.

Anyone add a heat pump when they got a new system installed?

You have natural gas in your house now that could be used for the HVAC furnace? If not, a heat pump most likely would be the best way to go; if you have natural gas, I’d lean more to a traditional split system with natural gas furnace.

Have a friend that is all electric, they changed their 2 old split system (electric heat) with heat pumps and love them.

Flat out told me I couldn't afford what he would charge. I did order everything on line. To get the ten year warranty, you have to have a HVAC person hook up everything. Other then that, I could of done it myself.

Was going to go with a heat pump, but I just can't see running the compressor year round. The cost for the heat pump system was only $150 more. Oh, besides that, I have a wood stove installed too!

I suppose heat pumps are a tad more complex than traditional split systems, but as you say they are not that more expensive. The cost of heating an all electric house is significantly higher than with natural gas which is where the heat pumps seem to shine and save on utilities. I know my friend said their utilities significantly decreased when they changed to a heat pump.

Fish didn’t you say in an older post your friend owns AccuTemp? If so I assume you have no reservation recommending them? I need some more HVAC replacement bids and they were on my list to call.

I have a buddy who works for Trane that replaced mine back in 2016. Went with a 5 ton, 17 seer Heil system. Replaced everything but the duct work and plenum for $6500. 5 tons on a 1900'ish square foot house sounds like a lot but it has no trouble keeping me at 71 all summer long. Much better than the crap 4 ton I had before. Forget the brand but it was straight garbage. Replaced the coils and went bad again within a couple of years.

If you call around now and let them know you'll be switching in the winter, they'll let you know the discount. I know a few HVAC service companies and they all do a relatively healthy discount if prescheduled.

Good recommendations for you by other posters. Here are a couple posts on HVAC replacement costs on the H&G board from this past spring and summer.

I ended up replacing mine two months ago.

Two 2-ton carrier condenser
Two coils carrier
1 furnace carrier
Two fancy new thermostats.

About $8k. My neighbor is carrier salesman and told me I got the systems at cost, he provided them. I have no way to verify it though. Your mileage may vary.
