Ok cool maybe it’s leftover from the testing the manufacturer did it on prior to shipping.

They may also put a slick coat on them in case they sit in a warehouse for an extended period. It’s a small insurance to avoid some surface rust.

Can we assume the generator is broken in since it’s refurbished?

Did anybody else’s have some oil at bottom of the box that leaked out or something
Don't know because my freight delivery dropped it in my driveway while it was raining and didn't call me or ring the doorbell, so the box was soaked when I got to it
But I oiled it up and test ran it over the weekend. Took a few tries to get it going the first time, but it ran fine, no issues that I can tell. It's super easy to use and to switch between gasoline/propane/NG. The battery powered electric start is pretty cool too. Didn't get a chance to really test the load...just hooked a shopvac to it for a bit to test the outlets.
I haven't bought the NG hose yet, so I'm wondering if any in here has gotten around to doing that yet to confirm the sizing.

Does anyone know how many gph this thing would use with propane?

If I’m reading this spec sheet correctly, it says 3.23 liters per hour at half load, which is slightly less than 1 gallon per hour.

$550
Absurd. I did it my self for about $75
Plenty of Y/T instructional videos for those who are semi competent with a screw driver.

I bought the GasPro 1/2” 25’ natural gas hose on Amazon. Your fitting may be different from the house, I needed a 3/4” to 1/2” adapter for mine. I’ve ran my Firman once without a load and it ran fine given the distance between my gas meter and back porch connection + 25’ of hose. Have an electrician coming to install a transfer switch and will test under load after.

I’m trying to decide between 3/4” and 1/2” coming from the attic, I’m guessing I should use the larger diameter and bush it down at the generator
It fired up after 3/4 attempts on propane, looks brand new

I get about 8 hours on a 20lb bottle if you take precautions from getting it to freeze up. It runs pretty close to gallon for gallon on propane with gas, the only difference should be the output. You have 4.6ish gallons of propane in a 20lb bottle. I have a 100lb tank now, hopefully that can get me through a couple of days if I can't get gas for some reason.

100% run 3/4”. 1/2” might be ok, but it might not. 3/4” isn’t much more trouble to run and there’s no harm in it being larger than you need. If 1/2” is too small, you’ll be pissed at doing that work and then having to redo it. Plus, you might need 3/4” if you get something larger down the road.

Thanks for the rec, grabbed the same one. Half the price of Firmans brand

FWIW, I was in Costco BR yesterday and the the Firman 9400 was reduced in price from $999 to $750, if anyone was interested in one but leery about buying a reconditioned unit.
My reconditioned unit is scheduled for delivery Monday - been sitting in BR for the past week waiting to be delivered as they couldn’t reach me - had to go update my phone number on eBay.

I have 3/4 pipe already available. So do I need an adapter to 1/2 and then buy a 1/2 gas hose line? Does the generator take 1/2 hose, is that the correct size?

Yes generator connection is 1/2 M

Mine arrived this morning. How much oil you all had to put in this generator - the amount is not specified in the owners manual.
