I have recently started noticing the shelf I keep my bourbon on is bowing a bit and it has me nervous as hell. Hard to find a solid answer on google, so thought I would come here for an opinion on what/how much this shelf should hold. It's 2 feet long and actual wood (not sure what kind) not particle board or anything like that. It's rested on the brackets shown which are part metal part plastic. You can see the bowing in the pic below. How much should a shelf like this be able to hold? TIA

Take it out and flip it over. Wood is a natural item and will have some flex to it over time. Just flip it once a year.

Makes sense, will do. For kicks, any idea what the weight limit should be on a shelf like this.

Honestly, I think your problem is the Blanton's. Heavy bottle, still full, and the wood is bowing right beneath it.

I will gladly find a new place to store the bottle for you that should fix the issue.

Looks to me the best solution would be to drink more and reduce the weight on the shelf

You can always add a 1x2 for the back and sides to rest on to give it extra support.

Seems like alot of weight. Do the peg holes look elongated or misshapen? You should probably flip the board like others have suggested

How's that Wilderness Trail? What would you compare it to?

Be sure and get pictures for the board when that thing gives way. Not a chance in hell I would put all my bourbon on a shelf held up by those plastic pin brackets. At a minimum, I would cut and paint a piece of wood to place vertically from the bottom shelf up to the center of that shelf to give it some additional support.

Does it have a rear support? Do you ever adjust those shelves?

Depending on the type of plywood and the direction of the grain, the “weight limit” can vary and is very difficult to predict. It’s not a failure of the pin or supports. Just strength of the wood itself.

If you don’t need the adjustability, screw some wood supports along each side and the rear instead of the pins. If you do need adjustability, install a 1x2 support on the front and back of the shelf to give it more strength.

I think this is what I'm going to go with, thank you

To be clear, I'll be taking the pegs out and supporting it with something like this instead. Thinking I may do on sides and in middle. Actually upon looking at it, it's just one bracket...meaning I guess I could leave it on the pegs and place this in the back center for additional support

Not sure of the limit, but like some said, maybe flip it over. Also, if this will be a dedicated booze cabinet, consider putting a vertical piece of plywood down the center as a support.

I’d definitely worry more about the hole the bracket sticks in than the actual board. Might want to get some vertical metal shelf tracks or whatever they’re called.

Subtle "Look at how much liquor I have on hand" post.

Like already mentioned, use 1x2 bracing along the back and side walls so the shelf is sitting on something real solid.

You could also cut the shelf to remove the rounded edge on front and face the shelf with another piece of 1x2 to make the front edge a lot stronger and less prone to bow under the weight.

Just the round pin is rated foe 25# per pin as per several cabinet parts dealers such as rocker etc.

The wood is not going to break, but it can slip off the shift pins if it flexes too much. A strip along the back, double up the board, or change it for a thicker board will work.
Or you could drink some of it.

That makes me feel a ton better. I searched over for the capacity of this particular pin and couldn't find a definite answer. I added the support pictured below in the center. Now now only should it not bend, but that brings the shelf capacity to 120#... which I wouldn't reach even if all the bottles were full...which they are for sure not. Thanks all

This is specifically the NOLA bourbon fest pick, and it's pretty outstanding as far as wheaters go. I don't drink much wheated and it's hard to compare it to either makers or weller, but I'd say it's closer in style to makers. The grain really comes through, but it's pretty complex for how young it is. Nice pour if you can find it.

This site can help you calculate the sag for a shelf:

Sagulator

Replace those pins. We had a shelf fall using those pins. Replaced them with these where the shelf keeps the pin in the hole:
