What smaller vacuum do you use / recommend?
Wife wants the Dyson V8.
Any recommendations?

Miele vacuums are superior

My mom got the compact recently and raves about it.

+1 for Dyson. Have had an Animal DC07 for 20 years. It’s a workhorse and I’ve replaced numerous parts on it that has extended its life. Parts are easy to come by.

Much more reliable than the 4 cylinder turbo

I bought a V8 this summer and I love it. I’ve never had a decent mini-vac and that’s one of my favorite things about this one. Easy to use on furniture, in the car etc. I bought it from QVC, even though my kids rag me about that. They had the best price and more attachments. There’s a newer model with a light and bigger canister, but I’m happy with the V8.

V8 is fine. Wife loves it for tile floors and rugs. Ours is several years old and sometimes we have to pop out the brush and clean it which isn’t hard. Rarely clean filter.
Battery will be bad after a few hundred uses. We got an adapter and just use generic Dewalt batteries same as we use for all my hand and lawn tools.

For cordless, Dysons are far superior. However, the batteries don't last long, but you can buy replacements on amazon.

If budget isn’t a concern, Dyson. We were between a refurbished Dyson and Tineco. Ended up chancing it on the Tineco due to the warranty and it was a little cheaper. Think we have the Tineco A11 Pet. No complaints so far, we’ll see how it holds up a year from now.

Piece of shite.
By definition all rechargeable vacs suck.
We went through 3 Dyson sticks and a shark stick and we're back to a big powerful plug in Dyson Ball.
I can't even describe how life changing it was after 2 years of underpowered suction and constant trips to the charging station and the wife handing me the Dyson stick to take apart and untangle the latest clog how good it feels to have a big heavy powerful vacuum cleaner again. Plus that Dyson stick fricker was like $600.
And you try to lean them against the wall to pick up a leaf or mulch your dog tracked in because they can't handle anything bigger or heavier than a dog kibble and they fall over while you're bent over gathering shite off the hardwood it refuses to pick up.
Luckily we bought them all at Costco so it was just a revolving door of exchanges.
Just say no to sticks.
ETA literally the only thing I enjoyed about the Dyson stick was taking the shaft off and holding it like a space gun and it making that cool noise for my 9yo.
Eta2 I realize that sounded a little harsh
Tl;Dr CADs wife is a clean freak and we have 7 animals so she vacuums at least once a day and she puts the hurt on any vacuum we get. Originally we liked the idea of the stick but the battery life and lack of suction just can't keep up with her and our dogs and I feel like I was bent over a sink every other day with the vacuum in pieces trying to clean all the crap out of the hoses and brush spinner kabob.

Holy shite... you didn't have to go all 'Falling Down' on them!
We've lived with the shark plug in stick, but the dust cup doesn't fill up, just the top section which is awful. I've been wanting to get a dyson ball plugin, but admit to being lured by the sticks.
I feel like this issue goes into the Tech section and I trust your tech thoughts. I guess the ball will be my wife's christmas present. And yeah she would rather have a good vacuum than jewelry.

i'll put it as plainly and objectively as i can. after constant cleaning clogs and my wife yelling from upstairs "CAD! can you please grab this and put it on the charger" when we got the plug-in ball, the first 2 things that struck me after 2 years of sticks was:
- the POWER. literally for the first time in years when we turned it on, i could see stuff on the floor near it getting sucked in. didn't realize until that moment how often we go over the same stuff multiple times trying to coax it into the stick (and dyson was the last one we had so i'm using it as my example). seems like we always had to put it on 'turbo mode' (for lack of a better term..the mode that eats the battery up in like 20 minutes) to pick up bird seeds the bird strowed all over the floor and like i said earlier; forget oak leaves the dogs track in. i just had to turn it off and reach down and pick those up.
- the amount of debris it can hold; i feel like i was hovering over the trash can constantly with the stick emptying it out.
- the lack of clogs..i actually had a routine where i would go outside after removing the shaft and brush from the dyson stick and swinging it in an arc to try & get the clog out using centrifugal force.

sticks just lack the power to pull clogs through.
again, my wife probably abuses the poor vacuums, but it was life changing to get that dyson plug-in after several years of telling ourselves the sticks were 'just as good'.

Purchased a Miele canister in 2008. Still works like new. The Porsche of vacuums.

After going though a few dyson batteries. I bought a little converter on amazon that lets you use dewalt batteries. Total game changer.
