Wife (no pics) and I are about to move into our first home. Looking to buy a refrigerator and washer/dryer set.
I recognize that some of you old geezers have much more life experience than me, so wanted to see if y’all had any recommendations on good brands/models or any which should be avoided? Much appreciated.

As a general rule, if they make a good TV, they make shitty appliances and stay away.

Old lady at an appliance repair shop told me to always buy whirlpool washer and dryers with no electronics. Just manual dials for controls. I followed her advice and I’m glad I did.

I got front load Samsung washer and dryer. I will never do a front load washer again.
The dryer tension pulleys have gone out about 4 times now. Super annoying, but also a 2 hour project to change. Cheaper to do that than buy a new one.
Only issue I had with the washer mechanically is the wife sitting on the ground, putting her feet against the base of the washer and ripping the door open like a gorilla while it was locked. She REALLY needed those pants out of there.
We do get that funky smell if we don't vent the washer while it's not being used. Which is why I won't buy another one again.
Haven't had terrible luck with our refrigerator as well. The ice makers quit working about 4 years ago but I have a 150lb ice maker at the house so I'm not spending the money to replace the ice makers. Seems like every fridge ends up with a phucked up ice maker eventually though.

Overall my outlook is to keep the electronics and gimics to a minimum and I am skeptical about web-connected appliances. I don't want my refrigerator to send me a text I'm low on milk but I can see the benefit of a text with a high temp alarm in the freezer (it's a balancing act).
For kitchen appliances I've been content with GE Profile. On the refrigerator I follow something my mom said years ago: keep the freezer on the bottom and the refrigerator on top. I go into the refrigerator a lot more than the freezer and a top refrigerator means all items are within reach without leaning over. French doors are nice but have developed an issue where one door doesn't always close properly due to wear on two of the weatherstripping/sealing components.
For the washer and dryer, I'm staying old school with a top load washer and as few electronic features as possible. I have a current thread troubleshooting a 22 year old Kenmore (made by Whirlpool) washer. I may not be able to find the issue but the key is it's a 22 year old machine and this is the first major issue. I've twice repaired prior minor issues.
The age of mechanical washers is mostly over with electronics and web connectivity taking over--do you really need to start the washer during your lunch break at work via a phone app? Speed Queen washers & dryers have been discussed extensively on the H&G board and seem to be the current gold standard if you want reliability and basic functionality. Speed Queen is my first choice when I am back in the market.
Speed Queen is more expensive up front but if it lasts 20+ years like my current "mechanical" washer, the amortized annual costs will be very reasonable.

I have had my LG washer and dryer for 14 years now. I replaced the heating element on the dryer about three years ago, and the drain pump on the washer about 5 years ago. Otherwise no issues.
My Samsung french door fridge is awful. The ice maker was replaced twice while under warranty, and broke agains since it expired. There is a class action lawsuit on the issue. I'd stay away from Samsung fridges.

For the last 20 years I've only had whirlpool. Always worked, never noticed washer really. Last one started leaking.
Bought new LG models against everyone's advice.
It is astounding how much better it cleans.
At this point, it can break one year in and honestly I will be okay with that

Buddy of mine has a full ice box in the kitchen and a full freeze in the butler's pantry next to it and I like that set up. I believe it's a Frigidaire. No freezer on the ice box.
Maytag washer and dryer have been decent.

has been my experience as well, and all the independent testing I've read shows the same. I haven't had speed queen, but we had older top loaders that never did as well cleaning as front load lg. We run at least 2 loads a day, and they've been going strong for 2+ years now with no issues. I'll buy another if it makes it 2 more years. Whatever you do, avoid top load HE washers like the plague.

Recently finished a new build. GE appliances all the way around accept for Washer and Dryer. Still rocking same old set I've had for years.

GE profile refrigerator's compressor failed in the thirteeth month of service. Six weeks and counting for the repair to be completed. I'm done with GE appliances.

Have a friend who recently purchased a Kitchenaid Fridge and has had service techs out a couple times because the fridge leaks water onto the kitchen floor and leaves a big puddle. Something with the defrost function.
I'm convinced it's mostly luck of the draw these days.

Fridge- anyone who doesn’t make TVs, too. The more Bosch stuff I buy, the more I like the company. Pricey, though.

I have a Bosch dishwasher and fridge and love both. Dishwasher is hands down better than anything else I’ve used.
