Anyone have knowledge of Payne, Goodman, and Lennox sub brand AC units?

Having to do a replacement and looking for some feedback on these brands. Online reviews are all over the place. Thanks.

I can only comment on Goodman, had one installed new 17 years ago and it’s still going. Had to replace the capacitor 3 times and something else in the attic (forget what it’s called). Under $1k in repairs over the years so it’s been good to me.

knock on wood

all use the same parts. you are better off selecting the best contractor you can find and using whatever they recommend.

That's kinda what I understand as well, but I wasn't sure just how much that really played into the equation.

We have a Goodman, installed on new construction in 2014. We have had refrigerant leak problems for probably 3 years now.

HOWEVER....from everything I've read/know...Part of the problem with Goodman's reliability reputation is that just about any jackass off the street can go buy and install one. So, like the other guy said, I think the most important thing is to make sure you find a good a/c guy and use whatever he recommends and will work on for you for the next 10 years.

Ours has leaked, but I like the guy who installed it-he's taken good care of us and not charged us for the refrigerant he's had to come and top off for us, because ultimately, he knows that he or one of his guys is probably the reason its leaking.

Most coils are made by third parties and that is why all HVAC manufacturers have had the same leak issues.

Lennox turned to making coils in house because they lost faith in the third party maker.

This - shop the reputation of the installing HVAC company over the brand of the equipment.

FYI, Payne is a “lower cost” Carrier product - I don’t know if it is made/assembled in the USA or Mexico - if that is important to you. My parents have a Payne and have had no issues with it but it’s only several years old.

Goodman is now owned by Daikin, which I believe is the worlds largest HVAC manufacturer, and their systems are made/assembled at a relatively, new modern plant in Houston. As stated Goodman often has a poor reputation, but many HVAC professionals on sites that I read attribute that more so to poor installs vs equipment quality because anyone can purchase a Goodman (one need not be an authorized dealer) and have them installed often by less knowledgeable, less experienced individuals to save $$$.

I think I’ve read an issue with Lennox is that sometimes parts maybe not be readily stocked/available a HVAC supply houses, for some reason or another, and thus a potential needed repair could take longer if a part needs to be shipped in, but I truly don’t know if this is a fact, but you can ask about it or look into it further.

Just remember a HVAC is not a plug in system like a TV, components must be assembled on site, there is cutting and brazing of refrigerant lines, installation of filter driers, evacuation and purging of refrigeration line sets, proper installation of condensate lines, etc. etc. etc. and short cutting any step in the process can lead to poor HVAC performance - hence the emphasis on choosing a quality installer over the name brand on the equipment.

I had 3 Goodman’s on my house when it was built.

All three had Freon leaks and two have been replaced (2yrs ago). We bought the house new in 2009.
The last unit is on its last leg and we will have to have it replaced in the next year or two.

I’d run away, far away from the shite that Goodman puts out.

Yes, I under that any one can buy and install but every single leak we had was in the coils. The company would not help us with any of them when I respirated help 2 yrs within the 10yrs every other company warranties their stuff. Not Goodman. At least not at the time.

Yes I am angry about it. I will run that damned company down ever damned chance I get.

They are all designed with an expected life span of 7 to 10 years (every brand) , if you are lucky. The day of a system lasting 20 to 30 years are gone.

Same with home appliances.

The only exception would be ultra high end models, they will have a better warranty and somewhat better materials.

The evaporator issues have been very common bc a few of them went with copper coated aluminum to save costs.

I have a Lennox 4 ton and it's about 12 years old..I just had it serviced and the guy said that the cooling fins were deteriorating.. He said that is common with Lennox.. Other than that it's a great system..

My neighbor has a Goodman for around 10 years. I think he has had some small problems.. He runs that sucker 24/7. He went on vacation for a couple of weeks and left the thing on the whole time...

Have a 12 year old Goodman, still going strong. Only complaint is the compressor sounds like a diesel truck. Other than that, it will blow us out of the house at times.

I have a 9 year old Goodman heat pump with gas backup furnace. Compressor motor failed after a year and was replaced under warranty. Since then, I've had no issues.

My HVAC cousin did the install and was pretty particular and I helped as a laborer. Don't know if that's why I've had good luck or not.

I have a Luxaire, which is a sub brand of York, and it's been great. Comparable warranties, but like many have said, installer trumps brand name.

Also getting it done in the off season when its not 140 in your attic helps.

We've had a Lennox 2 stage and 1 stage for 2 years. Both been very good. Reduced energy cost too. But our previous units were almost 30 years old.
