Every now and then homedepots deal of the day. I order like a year or two worth and just stick them in the attic.

I’ve used the Nordic Pure filters from Amazon for a while. Very good sturdy construction and made in the USA. Best ones I’ve found yet

this is the way. Amazon brand filters are also good and cheap. Don't overthink it. Just find your size and subscribe and save on amazon. same quality as HD/Lowes for half the cost

We have Aprilaire filters on all 3 of our units. They would incredibly well and I change them once or twice a year.

When perusing professional HVAC forums like HVAC-Talk, Aprilaire filters are the ones most favored, considered the best, by techs but they don’t make a wide variety of sizes or thicknesses - in my case I’d have to change both my air return grills/plenums, to use them. Might be a project for down the road.

Main thing is if using 1 inch thick filters is to not use a highly restrictive, high MERV pleated filter as it restricts air flow and increase total external static pressure (TESP) which can shorten the of life of the unit/blower motor over time as it tries to overcome the resistance to air flow, also reduces air flow in CFM with PSC blower motors. In those cases better to use a low MERV filter and change it more frequently.

I rotate between discountfilters, filterbuy, and amazon. They all have sales at different times so I go with what's cheapest at the time I need to purchase.

I have always heard this, but every hvac tech I've spoken to about it says that this is no longer the case.

This post has been very useful and I’d like to switch to ordering online.

Looking at the dimensions for 24x24x1 filters and they measure 23.38"L x 23.38"W x 0.75"Th. Anyone find an issue with them not fitting tightly in the return opening? These are the only negative reviews I see on them.

Perhaps they are referring to the fact “newer”, since 2020, furnaces or air handlers/fan coils use constant torque or variable EMC blower motors and not PSC motors. EMC motors will ramp up speed to in an attempt to maintain a constant air flow with a restrictive or restricted air filter - but it comes a increased energy cost and potentially shorter life of the blower motor. EMC motors are many times more expensive than PSC motors found on many/most “older” units, “old” being several + years.

The main function of the HVAC filter is to protect the HVAC equipment, motor/coil from becoming dirty, not improve IAQ for human health - that’s a secondary benefit if your system can handle a higher MERV filter.

If you want to devote 1/2 hour of your life, this Y/T video by a HVAC tech/instructor in FL, teaching a class to other HVAC techs, discusses filters, it’s a bit more complex topic than most realize.
