Is there anywhere around BR or Ascension I could pick up a replacement capacitor for my unit like today? It's a 45/10/440R

Always, always, always have a spare capacitor, and relay, on hand for an AC unit.

You can order these from Amazon, etc. for not much.$20 or so.

I just remembered St Gabriel Hardware usually has 1 or 2 AmRad 200 capacitors in stock LINK if you have trouble find your specific capacitor. It is a universal capacitor that comes with jumper wires that you set the microFarads you need for your HVAC - watch the short video on the website on how it’s done. They are somewhat more pricey at about $80 or so but an excellent USA made capacitor with a 5 year warranty.

These threads on capacitors show up every so often. What’s the deal?
I’ve been owning homes (4) over 40 years, had 6 central air units and never had a capacitor failure. Am I just lucky?
I’ve had other issues such as a Freon leak once, compressor failure, never a capacitor.

Nor have I, but it is the most common repair HVAC techs make. Like many things today, capacitors installed in more modern units, often made in China, are not as robust as those made in the past.

Like someone said.... most A/C unit now come with cheap Capacitors from China that are more likely to fail than in years past.

You can buy a cheap capacitor for about $20 or a made in USA [AmRad| for $40. They are easy to DIY. To determine what capacitor to buy, the information is written on the capacitor. To get information, take off the cover plate on the outside unit. DO NOT TOUCH ANYTHING NEAR THE CAPACITOR, BECAUSE IT CONTAINS VERY HIGH VOLTAGE. Take a picture or write down the information written on the capacitor. I purchased my capacitor from Amazon.

To change the Capacitor.....

Turn off power to the outside unit. There should be an ON/OFF switch next to the unit. Take off 2 screws on cover plate and remove it. Discharge power stored in capacitor. [Watch youtube video]. Take picture of wires connecting to capacitor before removing wires. Remove screws that holds capacitor in place. Pull wires off capacitor. Connect wires to new capacitor. Secure new capacitor with screws. Install cover plate. Turn power back on. Complete.

What is the deal..... 2 fold.

1. Cost saving. $40 vs $300+ for A/C guy to come out.
2. You can DIY in 30 minutes and get house cool again instead of waiting hours or overnight for service guy to come.
3. Happy wife.

I have owned houses for 50 years and only remember 2 capacitors failing. I have a spare. I also have spare dryer door switch [$9 part] after paying $190 for 15 minutes work when the wife said she could not wait a few days for me to buy one. Oh, I also have a spare dryer drum belt.
