It will work.
If 220volts is feasible get one.
A simple box fan will help move air also.

It will work without insulation. Insulate the door. The walls will be fine.

Home Depot's got a nice super strength floor fan for $99, quiet as can be and will blow you out. We use one on our covered patio in the summer, it's the only way to tolerate this heat.

Well if you have 5 kids you are rich so just have the garage air conditioned and forget the window unit

My youngest just left today to head back to campus after being home since mid-March when campus closed. He spent a month in Montana/Wyoming, other than a couple of weeks at the beach he's been home.

When he's here, all of this buddies basically live at my house. The wife feeds them and we have 5 bedrooms, so they crash wherever they can find a place. They are all 20-21 yr old college kids now, and my house has always been the place they congregate.

You are doing a good thing giving those boys a place to hang out now, and with 5 kids it'll be used for a lonnng time.

I have a 25x30 shop with a garage door and have two window units and cools it 74-75 in about 20-30 min.

Like someone said I added insulation before sheet rocking and it helped a lot.

They’re city boys. Well, to me they are.

But i get it. They want to hang out in there. 78 degrees is better than 100. So why not?

It will work, but your light bill will go up.

I hear you. Me and my friends hung out in my parents garage growing up as a kid doing the same shite. Ping pong table, basketball goal in the driveway, pool in the back. The garage had 2 garage doors, one In the front and one back so we had a breeze plus fans so it wasn’t that bad.

If we wanted water there was a hose pipe right outside that we would drink out of

It’ll work if you get a big enough unit. But without insulation and the garage door not offering much insulation, the window unit will never shut off. Just do like we all did with our garage gyms in high school, get a big gym fan and open the garage door.

It won't do much unless the garage and garage door is insulated and unit is over-sized.

What the hell happened to kids?

They are worried about AC?

Tell them they are lucky you are letting them use the space and to suck it up. Buy them a big floor fan if anything.

I can't believe the OT let you slide on this.

It's way too hot in July and August. He would probably rather eat the extra cost on his electric bill than have 5 kids stomping around the house all summer.

Insulate the door. Insulate the rafters. Buy a big fan for them to use come October.

With no insulation it would take a mini split at least. And even that might not be enough.

BTUs are BTUs. A 12,000 BTU window unit will cool the same as 12,000 BTU mini split. It could be cheaper to run with a higher efficiency mini split but it will get just as cold just as fast.

1 ton 12k btu unit for each 12x12 space

the average garage will need at least a 24k btu unit and you will need a 240v power supply for it since nothing above 18k btu uses 110v

I converted my double garage (473 sq ft) to a gameroom and have a small window unit. It keeps it as cold as I want in there - easiest room in the house to control the temperature. The window unit is also a heater in the winter. Cost $300-400.

DO IT! The window unit will keep them somewhat comfortable and they won't even need it at all in a couple of months. Any time teenagers want to hang out at your house LET THEM. We raised two sons and always tried to ensure them and their friends were welcome at our home - the peace of mind and them knowing their parents are interested in their activities and well-being - priceless. And BTW, they are now successful adults.

I have no experience with window units. Any advice? Will it even work? It’s so hot here that I’m doubting a window unit will do a thing.

It will work fine. It will make it bearable. Look until split level and ductless systems too.

However..
