We had problems with birds in year one, but not squirrels.

We started with a raised bed type structure with concrete wall blocks and 2x6s. After the birds took half of the first year’s blueberries, I built a PVC grid for year two. Covered it with 1/2” net and some mockingbirds still managed to get in.

Year 3 I bought a larger net with a smaller 1/4” opening which has worked great for the last several years.

Current set up. We put up the net in late April or early May and take it down and store it once the blueberries are done in June.

Squash coming in now, just need a couple more weeks and this will have been a huge success. No sign of trouble spreading either on the lemon squash or tromboncino. Pulled the edamame

What is the variety of the Cucumber next to your arm? Is it open pollinated?

Tromboncino making the turn on the trellis . Very vigorous plant and the squashes are excellent. Going to fry some tonite

Happy to see everyone’s success so far!

I feel like my cucumbers are behind where they normally would be this time of year. But I’m finally starting to get a few growing. Will be picking soon enough!

In the meantime, it’s a good thing we like tomatoes.

I don’t recall exactly. Pretty sure it was some burpless variety I got from Cleggs.

One of my vines is making them shaped like those long squash. Thinking poor pollination? or maybe uneven watering.

So they are all male flowers?
Had this happening with my pumpkin vines before and the advice was to fertilize it with miracle gro bloom booster (high phosphorous). It worked.

When doing my second planting, I noticed one of the varieties I bought for this year is parthenocarpic. I had no idea this was a thing until i got into persimmons earlier this Spring.

My cucumbers started out with only male flowers. Then the females flowers showed up. I pollinated with a paintbrush and got a bunch of fruit. After that, the pollinators got to work.

Yes, we hammer the PVC in the ground with a rubber mallet, usually after a rain so it goes in easier.

We bought the net from Pond & Garden Depot. It's held up really well; now in its 5th year. Highly recommend it. Lots of different sizes.

Is anybody else growing Tasmanian chocolate tomatoes? These things are amazing. Imgur is failing me or I'd post pics. Beautiful tomato and tastes even better. Just a little S&P is all they need, although a few days ago I was jealous AF of the bacon and tomato sandwich I made for Mrs. Juice after I had already eaten lunch.

Got the seeds from Johnny's. Easy determinate plants, and got a good head start with year with the warm spring before the canopy grew in.

nine yards of the BEST raised bed soil I have ever used. It took 40 yards to fill my three big garden beds and the results have been amazing

the dude custom ages, grinds and mixes at his yard and the quality is just not something you can buy in a bag
