it appears this was a down year for Betelgeuse. I haven’t seen a one and I’ve got a full 8x20 bed plus a 20’ trellis of squashes

My traps have a bunch. I am now a believer in traps + foil + vertical growth. It's amazing how much they look like a red wasp when flying.

The squirrels are invading out garden and going after the cream peas. This is the first time I planted them in a raised bed. The peas are taking over everything I put in the bed for them to crawl on and they are going after the deer fencing.

Started a few squash a couple weeks ago. O was in the garden this morning and saw a SVB trying to get to the stem of my squash. I guess they're back,

I’m going to plant green beans mid to late August
Need to pick what I have ready now & pull the plants up
Lots of blooms / tiny beans but they aren’t really growing

I planted 100' purple hulls about a week ago, they are 2-3 inches tall. I will replant my snap beans Mid-August.

Up here in NW Arkansas I may pick my first mess of cream peas soon. My wife's Chinese noodle beans are just about done. along with the bell peppers. She is canning noodle beans today. We may plant a late crop of lima beans in the two 4' diameter raised beds that the noodle beans and peppers are in. Up here the ground is too rocky to plant anything directly in the ground.
So far I have only three watermelons growing in our first attempt to grow them. We had a late start to planting this year due to the weather.

Something small got into the peas yesterday evening or last night and damaged a big part of it. My first idea was squirrels being I have a fence around the garden.

I’m still DEEP in cucumbers and just started picking tomatoes this week. Should have lots of tomatoes into September. Beans are starting to taper off and peppers are poised for a great August ripening.
Probably will begin pulling cucumbers and beans and planting okra to get through summer, expecting it to be very hot and dry.

Sharing a method to freeze cucumbers that I tried last year and really liked.
Slice cucumbers into half moons and salt generously. Place in fridge for 2+hrs.
Prepare sugar brine of 1 cup vinegar to 1.5 cups sugar (can lower to 1 cup if desired). Fully cool to room temperature.
Drain and wash cucumbers and fully mix in sugar brine, freeze in ziplock bags.
I did this last year and pulled them out in January - the family loved them (drain brine off). Reminds me of a sweet Japanese salad.

I believe it is a racoon that has been getting into our garden. This morning I found some fur outside of the fencing. I added an additional 2' of fencing which makes it 6' now. This morning the gate was open some, so I guess it got in that way. But something must have got it since I found the fur. I now have the gate secured. Being I saw my first armadillo in a while the 22lr rifle will be coming out of the gun safe. If I can catch the racoon he will be shot also.

coons can make a mess no doubt. Fortunately of all the critters we do have, coons are not one of them. I’m not sure why but I’ve maybe seen two in 20 years. Lots of possums but they don’t bother the garden
