I just returned from a weekend at our camp in Cocodrie, LA. The camp is on an island in the middle of the marsh. I woke up Saturday morning to 50-60 humming birds in the 3 or 4 Chinese Tallow trees. It was one of the cooling things i have seen. you could walk right up to them while they were feeding.

Interesting. Does the island have a lot of nesters or do you think these are on their way North?

I have never noticed them before so I'm thinking they are just moving their way North.

to be safe, the nectar needs to be changed every 2 -3 days
mine was out there for nearly a month - didn't discourage my 3-4 regulars. They finally sucked it almost dry this past week so I cleaned and refilled the containers

well, yeah, they'll continue to drink it if there's no alternatives, but it can develop bacteria and/or fungus that can eventually make them sick or even kill them, especially as it gets warmer...i usually put a small amount of nectar rather than filling the whole thing up...they can't finish a whole container before it goes bad...i'm not trying to be preachy, i'm speaking from experience...i found a dead bird at one of my feeders years ago, before i knew about the nectar going bad...i don't know for sure that was the issue that time, but i'd rather never find a dead one again...

My last batch developed floaters really fast. I took the feeder down and did a deep clean after taking it apart as much as the design would allow. Lots of gunk in there.

No it's not too late. I have 2 feeders out from March-mid/late August & then go to 5 feeders until end of season during the fall migration.

canon r7 with 200-800mm lens and 1.4x extender...it was a bit of overkill because she let me get really close after a little while

It's about to start happening. I'll go from 1 to 4 feeders this weekend.

I have had 4-8 hummers hanging out everyday since April. Over the last couple of weeks it's up to 10-20. Currently I go through about 24 ounces of juice a day. 2nd week of Sept is when I get the fall migration explosion & juice use can go as high as 1/2 gallon a day. I have 4 feeders. May add a couple more.

I just saw birds today. Cleaned and refreshed feeder this afternoon and now see 3 birds visiting. Looks the fall migration might be beginning!
