Oh yeah. My tomatoes already quit setting new fruit. Ran sprinklers in the yard today out of habit.

I've been watering morning and evening for the past week or so.
Am I in danger of promoting some type of fungal disease or root rot?

Possibly. Could also cause BER problems. I’m still watering every three days and I haven’t had any trouble yet.

We should get some rain and cooler temperatures mid week.

Definitely this...that massive rain we got a couple weeks back did this to a handful of my plants.

My timer broke, so mine didn't get water all week. Plants didn't skip a beat, look great. There's still decent residual soil moisture after all the rain 2 weeks ago... that said, a few more days without rain and it'll get dry real quick.

What does BER abbreviate? Anyone?

Blossom End Rot

Overwatering, or big fluctuations in watering, is almost always the culprit. While technically a calcium deficiency, most of the time it’s not due to lack of calcium in the soil. It’s an uptake issue.

Well, I can water tomatoes in the early morning and by evening the leaves look wilted and shriveled. Add water and everything perks right up. Cucumbers also.

Try deep watering a couple days a week. I run overhead sprinklers for an hour twice a week when we don't get rain. No BER issues and the soil stays moist.

Ayone try to grow peanuts in south LA?
I was reading about them and it seems like a good crop to grow in the summer months.

Anyone have an idea on how to keep birds (I assume) of the beds? I've had probably 6-8 tomato's smoked by birds. Driving me crazy, checked this morning and had a cluster of about 4-5 tore up.

Owl decoy?
Fake snakes?

i had that problem last year during the drought. i didnt pick a single fruit because of squirrels, birds, and rabbits. saw someone mention hanging a few red xmas ornament balls on the tomato vines before they fruit. the birds mistake them for tomatoes and stop coming to them after being fooled a bunch of times.

i havent tried it yet, but the theory seems solid.
