So how about this?
Um, Yes?

Closest tendril is still green, supposedly ready when that dries.
eta: supposedly

I had read that they're easier to determine when ripe.
This is my first year planting cantaloupe because my son wanted to plant them. All of ours have been small, but they are definitely easier to tell when ripe.

I've used that, pushing on the opposite end method (when it gives some it's ready), and old fashioned knocking and listening for hallow sound. A combo of the 3 has led me right just about every time.
I've still got tomatoes coming in. Majority have blossom end rot though. Need to either cut them out or give them some calcium to see how long I can push them.
Yard-long beans are still producing left and right. Watermelons are just about ready. The jalapenos are doing good and I can't keep up, I need to do another round of cowboy candy.
Okra I am having trouble with which is weird. The plants are pretty short for this time of year (maybe 2 feet) and I haven't gotten a single okra yet. I looked the other day and ants had completely eaten a decent sized okra off of it. I need to put some killer down around the base, that is the first time that has ever happened to me. I've had them harvest the aphids off them before but never actually devour the okra.
I have only a few pounds of honey left from my harvest. This year I was giving it away by the mason jar to family and friends. Next year I need to jar and sell some of it to the public to get a little money back.

My peppers are finally really rolling. I picked these yesterday and have just as many left on the plants.
My tomatoes are still going and have several on the vine as well. I've gotten lazy with them though. Some look a bit sick and the birds are doing a number on them. I'm probably going to start some fall tomato seeds this week.

Mine too. biggest was about the size of a softball. I attribute that to the heat, lack of rain, and weed competition.

My peppers have basically shut down. I guess the hot nights? I still have most of my roma crop on the plants, but the grapes and cherry are about done. I cannot say enough about my one Husky Cherry. That thing was a machine. It probably outproduced all my other small tomatoes combined and is still going. It also did not turn into an unwieldy vine that is a problem to contain. It just got wider and heavy while continuing to produce.

Harvested honey on Sunday. Got about 13 gallons from 4 hives. But we weren't ready and forgot to buy jars, so it's all just sitting in buckets until they come in.

Do you start them indoors due to the heat or direct sow?

My Carmens were LOADED. All ripened and were harvested. Plants sat for a couple of weeks but are starting to flower again now.
Also, I rooted suckers off my Mountain Magic tomato and planted one in the garden. Miraculously, it has set fruit in the 115 degree heat index we have had. I don't understand how this could possibly happen.
My okra is only a foot tall. Hoping they will decide to start growing soon.
Something weird going on around here.

Meant to post this sooner. We cut open our first watermelon on July 4th. It was pretty, sweet, and delicious. So I think I’m getting the hang of being able to tell when they’re ready!

Got my drip irrigation installed an hour before we got an inch of rain. Glad to get it. I think we'd had about a half inch in the past 5 or 6 weeks.

We're very new to tomatoes, and actually have some growing for once. One of the big ones has pits on it, is that likely birds? What's a good/easy way to deter that without putting a 13 year old on guard duty with a bb gun? They are in big pots with cages on the deck, so I could possibly rig something over them.

I'd eat em. They look perky.

Thanks! The bigger varieties are about done but my cherry/grape tomatoes are still setting.

Fall tomato seeds are started in the garage. That melon and the 2 almost the same size are still on the vine. The deal is still green connecting it, but we do have a nice yellow spot on the bottom. Went back and reseeded a few spots where the cutworms or grasshoppers ate the pinto bean and black eyed pea seedlings that came up. I did check the sweet potatoes and saw orange about a foot deep. We are coming up on 100 days from planting the slips.
Capped the afternoon with spraying the driveway with herbicide and doing some barbed wire fence work. Two of my absolute least favorite things to do. I just walked into the pool with a beer in the clothes i had on after that.
and I like your melons!
