Put down my Pre Emerg a couple weeks ago. Sprayed the Clegg's cocktail last week. I'll probably do it again in 2-3 weeks. My memory is a little fuzzy on when to do my first fertilization. I'm thinking early April after I've done a couple of cuts and the grass as fully greened up?

Just purchased a new home and I currently have a dirt yard. I'm thinking about just laying sod but if I decide to plant grass seed, can someone help with steps to do so? Most of my yard is full sun with the exception of 20 feet or so in the back yard. Thinking about Bermuda but would like the boards opinion. Thanks

If you have the budget sod is the way to go. Much less babying and immediate results.

eta if i was sodding i'd probably do empire zoysia or something similar.

Bermuda is a great grass for full sun. I'd consider how much shade that back 20 gets though. If bermuda gets under 8 hours of sunlight it will start to thin out. I do not suggest seeding a whole lawn though. Possibly hydroseed but like mentioned, sod is the way to go.

What's the solution? I have a tree in my front yard that basically has thinned out the patch directly under it.

Should I aerate and overseed?

Get more sun, thin out the branches to allow more light or cut down the tree.

Otherwise consider other grass type depending on how much sun those spots are truly getting(otherwise you'll just have the same problem) or do different ground scaping with shade tolerant plants or do some hardscaping.

I've had good luck putting down milorganite on my st. Aug but I don't remember when I put it out in the past. Any insight on when to lay that down? I live in LC, LA.

On a side note, I put down scotts weed and feed prior to this weeks "rain".

I would not put milo out past late June. The nitrogen has to be processed by the soil microbes and there is no telling how long that takes. If you throw it out in august the yard may not take it up until September or October when u shouldn’t be fertilizing.

Also be aware of the amount of phosphorus you are applying. My advice is get a soil test and see what you really need. Then buy fertilizer accordingly. There are MUCH cheaper options than milo.

If it is bermuda it may be tough to get grass to grow if the tree is large. If you think it is thinned out enough you can try to seed and see what happens. Cut your fertilizer to half in shaded areas. The grass will try to grow faster than it can photosynthesize food.

If you can get grass to grow you can make a circular flower bed around the tree.

May have jumped the gun on scalping the yard. Ronk, how concerned should we be about the forecast for Saturday?

Not really. A one to two day dip in temps doesn't really affect soil temps. Where are you located?

Is today too late to do Prodiamine on the North Shore? What about next week?

While pre-ems work better if you get it down before soil temps get to high, it is certainly better to put it down late than not at all. It will still help, just not as effective.

So yes, I'd still put it down this week or next and water it in.

Getting a fair bit of green in from my scalp last week. Will probably start manual reeling soon to keep it green and get that lateral growth going. Temps reaching freezing here for a day but should be the last of the year. Expect lawn to take off after this.

Otherwise, I gently manual reeled mowed my backyard today. I overseeded some spf-30 Kentucky bluegrass in the back about 3 weeks ago. Supposed to be a drought and heat resistant strain. Finally got germination about a week ago and starting to see some sprouts. Most people recommend doing this in the fall but I never got around to doing it this past fall and the seed was going to"expire" so I just went ahead and threw it out. We'll see if it survives the summer heat and humidity here.

I’m about to start cutting my centipede with a manual reel. Looking forward to seeing how it goes.

Have some giant bare spots from Ida debris in my front yard I want to get growing again. Following this from the ag center:

LINK

I have a bunch of weeds that have sprouted up in the bare spots- what’s the best post-emergent herbicide to kill off the weeds before planting the grass?
