I think I saw a bee earlier in the week. No where near the garden.

I was more hopeful a few weeks ago. Bees were all over the place. But, like last year, they suddenly went away. And just like last year, they’re slowly showing up again. It confuses me.

I’ve planted sunflowers and zinnias near the house to hopefully attract more. The zinnias are blooming like crazy. Hopefully it’ll help.

I have never had a single honeybee show up in the three years I've lived here.

Only bumble and carpenter bees.

Mostly those over here as well. I have seen some honey bees, but my guess is the hive is probably far away and I'm just seeing a few that travel long range.

I’d really like to get a nuc. But I’m sure I’d have to talk to my neighbors first. I know nothing about beekeeping and would definitely need to study up on it.

I looked into it quite a bit until I realized the farm dusters would wipe them out in no time. That way I read, it seemed like if I stuck them in a corner and surround with bushes from the get go, I would hardly be able to tell they were there since their flight path would be elevated.

It really would be a neat hobby to get into assuming you have the space. Someone had a long thread on it that started on the outdoor board about a year ago.

Edit: Found the thread.

ETA: sorry for the giant photos. Not sure why imgur did that.

Here are some photos. Things are going well for the most part. Still been fighting these damn aphids on eggplants but I feel like there are less around now. I've had a bunch of cherry tomatoes ripen, and got my first full sized ripe tomato yesterday (new big dwarf). It was 15oz. Peppers are being slow to ripen but I've got several changing colors now. I don't normally pick them green.

These are supposed to be hungarian hot wax peppers. They are decidedly not ha. They're hot though, so whatever.

sweet million:

squash and zucchini is still going strong. vine borers are all over them but the Sevin on the vines is working for the second year in a row.

steroid marconi peppers. probably 14" long:

big red bell in the foreground and corno di toro giallo in the back:

Nikita peppers (supposed to ripen with orange/red streaks):

islander peppers. these are supposed to ripen from purple, to yellow/orange, to dark red. I'm just kind of along for the ride at this point.

Fred's tie dye. Probably favorite tomato.

Pink berkeley tie dye. These are smaller than I expected:

Cherokee purple:

Striped German. I'm keeping this plant at 2 stems. Trying to grow as big of a tomato as I can.

Big beef. Reliable.

Red torch:

Well I was thinking I was about two weeks behind you LA folks, but I think I'm closer to three now.

The weather here has been unseasonably cool and while my snow peas love it, my tomatoes and peppers do not.

My sea island red peas are growing like weeds though, and I expected them to be slow until it warmed up as well.

I can post a pic of my tomato plants to make you feel better.

They took a while to get going but have come on strong in the past week. I probably have close to 2 dozen tomatoes on 4 plants but none close to being ripe yet.

My stuff is also kinda behind. I lost a bunch of peppers early on to that weird blossom rot I was dealing with. That seems to have worked itself out thankfully. I also lost my real first cluster of flowers on most of my tomato plants because I had a bacterial issue with them whenever I planted them out in the garden. I’m hoping tomatoes will start ripening over the next 10 days or so.

Good thing about the relatively cool weather is all the tomato plants are still setting fruit.

My cherry tomato is going crazy. I think I have about six bunches now, all with 8-10 tomatoes. Finally getting a few sets on my Cherokee purple, have two bunches on my San Marzano, and about six on my better boy.

Peppers are flowering, but still no peppers. Figure it's too cool for them right now to set fruit.

I thought I was going to have a bumper crop of persimmons this year, but the damn tree is starting to drop the immature fruit again like it has the previous two years.

Bluemoons - give me some advice on dwarf tomatoes a/v bff the varieties you like. I'm ordering seeds for this fall/next year and want to give them a shot.

Man I think they’re awesome. I’d have to go out there and count, but my dwarf plants produce almost just as many tomatoes as the big indeterminate plants. They’re so much more manageable. I’ve found them to be pretty disease resistant too, even though they’re very dense. I’ve grown new Fred’s tie dye, sarandipity, and now new big dwarf. The last 2 seasons, my biggest tomato came off a dwarf plant. The Fred’s tomato is my favorite. I ate the first new big dwarf today and really liked it.

I’ve heard really good things about the sweet scarlet and rosella purple varieties. I may try to grow them in the fall. I order my seeds from victory seeds or whatever. Dwarf tomato project. I can definitely see myself transitioning to only dwarfs over time.

When yall are talking dwarfs, you mean bushes right?

If so, I WHOLE heartedly agree!!

Have had the big boys and don't see any difference in yield EXCEPT with the roma...id get 20+ weekly off of two plants but they are unruly in how they grow and take over...like a damn cucumber!

Hoping to see some better bush harvest soon.

Edit: moons, your garden looks pristine brotha...cheers!

Thanks man. I've never grown any of the bushes. The dwarf varieties I'm referring to can be found here: LINK

A group of people basically just started crossing various tomato plants to make them smaller and more manageable.

All y'all posting awesome picks of veggies and I'm sitting here hoping my young plants make it until sunrise. We are supposed to have our latest freeze ever recorded here in Middle Tn. Good thing I've been somewhat late in getting most of my stuff planted.

I covered mine up for tonight. Some forecast are calling for frost here and some aren’t.

I covered it just to be safe. My garden is way behind.

It shocks me that we are hitting 50 here tonight. I couldn’t imagine dealing with frost this late.

Caught em in action today.

Also took a few other pics in the garden today. Did a lot of cleanup since the weather yesterday was kinda nasty.

A lot of those tomatoes were still pretty green. But they were starting to turn. And with all the rain yesterday I didn’t want them to split. So they’ll ripen on my island.

Also, a few months ago, my son’s school had this thing called Seed Survivor come to their class and teach them about plants and agriculture. They all planted some sunflower seeds in small cups. That thing is now over 7 feet tall and it looks like the flower is starting to open.
