Thinking of getting a few Bee boxes to play around with and looking for a few pointers.
Simply hoping for a few more garden and fruit tree pollinators and a bit of honey as a bonus.
Seems to be a lot of hate out there for the Flow hives out there but am leaning that way.
Any help appreciated.

Wanting to do the same myself. GF has a client who keeps bees in their backyard. Look up your local beehive club and go to one of their meetings. Will be able to send you in the right direction

I don't know really know anything about flow hives but the traditional way get expensive quick. All the shite you need just adds up. They are also a bit of a maintenance chore. You can't just set it and forget it. I got discouraged after my research.
If you have a decent area for bees you might get a local keeper to come put some hives out in your yard. Then you get your pollinators and get to see and talk to the keeper to get an idea if its something you want to frick with. Those local small-time keepers are usually very passionate about their bees and happy to bore you with details.

That is what I read but the only thing I know is we used to have a commercial bee operation from Wisconsin winter over hundreds of boxes on our farm.
The pulled up, set out boxes, and did not show back up for 5 months and then loaded up and headed north.
Seems the truth is likely somewhere in the middle and I dont mind a bit of work.

That is what I am scared of

My cousin has his own hives from trapping/collecting bees at peoples houses that needed them removed. He has made a good a bit of honey. He got a good local bee keeper to give him pointers.

I just purchased 2 nucs and all the equipment to get me started this spring. I’ve learned a ton by reading Beekeeping for Dummies and watching hundreds of videos. I’m going old school with the Langstroth hive.
Helpful videos
On YouTube I’ve learned a lot from Barnyard Bees, 4DHoneybee and many more.

My pops does, and like another poster said, he would love to bore you to death with details. Where are you located?

Skip the flow hives. If I had it over I’d do top bar hives but you really have to pay attention working them in the summer.
MS used to have a grant to reimburse up to $800 for new keepers. Not sure if they still do or not.
Beesource.com is a great forum for info.

Some folks on our property have some in the boxes.

I have about 12 hives and it does get expensive with the initial set up but if you learn how to make your own frames it helps a lot. If i had any advice for starting out go the nuc route. I don't like the packages cause you really don't know what you are getting. It's a little bit of work to get started but it really is an enjoyable past time. They are some amazing creatures

I keep bees. I keep bees the hell away from me with whatever spray I can get my hands on.

Been wanting to do this as well, but as others have mentioned, was surprised to see how expensive it is to get started.

My dad did when we were kids, man that honeycomb right out the box is heaven.

Was thinking more of building and baiting a few traps to catch a swarm

The OB is very knowledgeable in this. Wish I could help you farther

I started last year.
Happy to help out anyway I can.
It is an expensive upfront cost. I had a partner pay for half and and still about 800 deep in it for 3 nukes and boxes.

i have two (4) box hives; everything you need to know can be found on the web AND thru your local beekeeping organization (i promise you there is one close to you)
we just leave ours alone and let them do their thing...your garden and fruit trees will thank you
two things:
1) make sure there is a water source close by, or they WILL find your neighbor's swimming pool
2) do not spray pesticides in your yard, ever, and try to notify your neighbors that you have bees, and ask them to do the same...at the very least, never spray flowering plants
