5000 users....is that all it takes to slow this site down?

Is that all this site can handle at one time without being bogged down?
Seems like every time there is more that 5k this site comes to a screeching halt.

wait, this has happened before?
I guess you can not expect computer nerds to have the business sense to boost bandwidth on high traffic days. How many people will come here today and be turned off by the speed and never return?
If this is something that can be forecasted and planned for then it's very irresponsible for this to be happening today.
Who's responsible for this?

somebody needs to take a look at some server upgrades and high availability system design

Load balancing would also be a nice addition. Not trying to flame but this makes Chicken look bush league IMO

And I guess you can't expect non-computer-nerds to know the difference between bandwidth limitations and processing limitations. Message boards will almost always run into a processing brick wall before the bandwidth even comes close to being saturated.
Apparently I missed the slowness you're talking about, because the site is snappy for me even with close to 5000 users still.

The only time this site has been close to slow for me was when i was on the mobile version around the Rasco announcement.

It came to a crawl on a few separate occasions today

Do they slow you down once you meet some quota or something? I think you need to go cluck someone up.

We are exploring our options.

In the meantime, if they really are throttling your bandwidth, there are some things you (or Circus) can do to increase capacity. Since you don't host many images besides the logo and a few icons (and they get cached by the user anyway), I took a quick glance at the html and was able to shave 10% off the size of the board view pages, and 5% off the thread pages just by shortening the names of some CSS classes and a couple other things like changing the /images/ directory to /i/. I have only scratched the surface here... it's probably possible to reduce the size of every page by 15-25% (therefore increasing capacity by that much) or more, without disabling any features, limiting the number of threads shown, or affecting the site's usability in any way.
