This needs to happen. Every thread just spins its wheels because so many posters chime in and distract from the original debate between two posters.

Not at all, I think 99% of threads should stay as they are.
I'm just talking about occasionally allowing two bonafide posters go at it on an issue. Usually what happens is a good debate between two posters starts, and then 10 other people chime in and everyone starts chasing rabbits.

You could have other posters nominate the combatants and then take a vote. At first you could start with one debate a week and see how it goes.

They're not. But for the same reason that some people are asked to debate on TV, two debaters just brings more clarity.

The only one with the power to do this, ie restrict a thread to two posters are Chicken and Circus Child and I've never seen them do this. Would be the first thunderdome I've witnessed on this site.

I am generally in favor of thunderdomes in most situations. I wish some variant of thunderdomes could be utilized in our legal system some kind of way.

I'd support this if there was a time limit and the person with the most down votes at the end got a week ban. 3 bans and its lifetime. Would shut a bunch of people who think they know it all up.
