My knees are messed up and hurt after 5 minutes running outside or on a treadmill. I bought an elliptical and can burn 500 calories in 35 minutes. All while watching Netflix or Amazon Prime

Lmao. I bet you put your weight in when it asks you to huh. That way it will be perfectly accurate.

The Cybex arc trainers or Precor alternate motion machines are better than ellipticals if your gym has them.

I've always found people respect the elliptical machine. It's effective, that's for sure.

Nothing wrong with ellipticals. I don’t know how accurate the calorie counter is, but the machine and the exercise is fine.

The second law of thermodynamics states that Velocity = Mass x Acceleration. If you don't move anywhere I don't think you can theoretically be burning calories. At least not that many.

No idea. The Rock is on the elliptical every few days.

The “calories burned” function of those machines and many like the, are notoriously inaccurate in how many calories burned.

I guarantee you aren’t burning 500 in 35 on one.

I prefer ellipticals over the treadmill because there is no impact on your joints. Anyone who thinks you do not burn calories on these machines is a complete idiot. Now is the "calories burned" funtion accurate on the machines? Probably not, but I use that as more of an estimate anyway. If you get your heart rate up by doing physical movement, you are burning calories. As mentioned above, the Rock uses one regularly, and so does Joe Rogan. You think these guys, who have access to some of the most knowledgeable fitness and exercise experts, would be using them if they didn't work? That's doubtful.

Years ago, I tore a ligament in my ankle, and after two weeks of rest, I was able to get on the elliptical but not on the treadmill (because of the impact). That was the first time I used one. There would be a puddle of sweat on the floor under me when I was done with my 45 minute workout. I was able to get my heart rate just as high as if I was jogging on a treadmill. So if my heart rate was the same as on the treadmill, then I assume I'm burning a pretty similar amount of calories in the same amount of time.

I usually knock off around 15-20% of the calories burned on machines and even my apps if I walk/run at home.....I figure that’s a pretty safe estimate when I’m counting calories

No doubt. It’s a marketing ploy. The more calories it says you burn - the better you feel about yourself - the better you feel the more you’ll want to use it - the more people being seen using it the more others will want to.

Don’t get me wrong though, it’s a good workout. I use to interval train on them and kick my own arse.
