Which is worse: sugar/sweets or beer?

I’d like to shed the little bit of belly fat I have (I’m rather thin and skinny, but have a slight beer belly) and am wondering which of the two is worse. Look, I have vices, and I know giving up everything I enjoy just ain’t gonna happen. I have a huge sweet tooth and I love beer (though I contain my beer to Thurs-Sun). I just got finished Whole30 and saw really good results. But my ultimate goal is some actual abs. I go to the gym 5 days a week, mixing weights, general cardio (normally elliptical) and some HIIT. The belly is slowly but surely dwindling, but those 2 vices - sweets/candy and beer - are really hindering any additional results.

So...if I should drop one, which one? I’m leaning towards laying off all added sugars and allowing myself the occasional happy hour beer and some weekend beers. But not sure that’s gonna get me where I want to be. Is it better to do that or drop the beer and allow myself the weekend ice cream and pack of skittles?

So you want results but don't want to do any work? Good luck with that.

Yeah, not sure how you got that from my post. I go to the gym 5 days a week for an hour, did whole30, and basically maintain the whole30 M-TH during the week. I would say I work at it pretty good. I’m just asking if I can pick a cheat, which is better in the long run.

Sugar is the worst

And you need to limit how much calories you are eating each day to rid it. Eat less. Pay attention to how much you are consuming and you will reach your goals.

So you diet barely over half of the time. You're not going to get abs doing that. I'm not trying to be a dick, but you can't do something half time and get full time results.

You don’t have to drop either. Count calories. Do you have room for 600 kcals of beer to meet your goals? Do you have room in your goals to eat 2 pieces of cake?

Thermogenics is pretty simple. You cannot out exercise a shitty diet. It doesn’t terribly matter where those calories come from.

You’ll never have abs. Sorry. It take ridiculous discipline as you get older. You don’t have it. I don’t have it. But I couldn’t give a shite about having abs.

This. Also, if you really like beer (as I do, but I'm teetotaling for awhile--halfway through week 2), then further cut other carbs. Mix beer in with a sugar-free liquor drank here and there. I'll also do a bourbon with a Miller Lite sidecar. Super low carbs, in lieu of good beer (I just treat it like a little more tasty than soda water).

Supposedly, Bell's Two Hearted is fairly low for a good beer.

But ultimately, you're probably gonna need to keep the beer to very occasional to get to next level.

I have a hard time moderating alcohol to the extent needed to keep carbs and calories low. E.g., I can walk to numerous awesome happy hours for $2.50-3 Montana pints. I can't drink just one or two. I will usually end up "trying" 3-4 because they're so good and cheap.

So I do better just avoiding most of the time.

Speaking of, I feel like it's killing my ability to push through workouts. Is that a thing or am I just finding an excuse?

Replies in here are overly harsh, but it will be difficult to get a true six pack dieting as you said. I think the answer depends on a couple things. If you’re limiting it to a few beers thurs-sun but eating sweets the whole week, I would think the sweets would be the one to cut out because that is likely where more calories are coming from.

With a lot of discipline, and as one poster noted, you can eat both of you are just really strict about budgeting the calories into your diet (I would advise this no matter what though).

Thanks for the responses all.

I agree, unless I go full bore with this thing, chances are I'll never really get to that point of actually having some abs to show. It's still a goal, and I'll still continue to hit the gym and eat well (for the most part), but I dont have any plans to give up ALL things I enjoy. So was just curious if one was better/worse than the other in terms of affecting my progress. Sounds like just watching the good ole calories is most key.

I don't do ab workouts per se. Or really any weight training right now. But I can get a decent 6 pack just staying low carb and active. I don't assume I have some special metabolism either, because I can also put on some nice love handles and coat that 6pack in visceral fat if I'm not careful.

If I'm skiing nearly every day or in summer training for long runs and paddling etc, then I don't watch the beer as closely and it tends to balance out.

On the other hand, I couldn't drink for 7 months last year due to chemo, and even though the chemo (including steroids) actually killed the weight-loss- causing disease within a month (and I never really lost my appetite, in part thanks to MM), I had a pretty respectable six-pack mostly due to diet. I walked a lot and ran some but wasn't allowed to swim or do a lot of my outdoor stuff or fly anywhere. I was pretty stuck. But I stuck to fairly "strict" (I think that's a misnomer) keto and stayed very very lean without losing muscle mass. I ran a half marathon only 3 weeks after treatment and was fine.

The body is pretty amazing.

In regards to the 6-pack, generally yes like others have said abs are made in the kitchen. However, I know many hardcore distance runners who don't diet hard and have 6 packs, but they also run 60+ miles a week. I know that lifestyle and physique isn't for everyone.

Point is find a good balance for you and your lifestyle, and remember even small gains count and will make a difference over time.

Personally, cut whichever one is easiest for you to cut first. If that works for the results you want, awesome.

If it doesn't work in the way you want, you know what has to happen...

This is probably the best advice so far, atleast from a long-term management standpoint.

As for me, I cut out most all beer about 2 years ago. I still have one from time to time and enjoy the taste, but I just don't seem to metabolize them well at all. They always make me feel sick, lethargic and bloated.

I switched pretty much exclusively to liquor during that time, and it's much better for me from a health standpoint. I can have a handful of scotch on the rocks or vodka sodas each night and feel fine. If I have a bunch of beers, I'll be hurting the next day.

FYI your body is not going to differentiate one from the other. Both alcohol and sweets will be converted into sugar in your body. If that sugar is not used, it will go to fat storage. My advice would be to limit intake on both but not eliminate.

Try to have your sweets/candy to pre workout, that way you at least use that sugar for fuel.

I’m sure this has been discussed already but I don’t have time to read the thread. What is worse is whatever puts you in a calorie surplus for the day. Sometimes it might be beer and other times sweets. Up your protein, eat at a calorie deficit and you’ll lose.

Doesn't matter, they are all the same. Thus, it comes down to the quantity consumed.

Exactly. They are the same. If they fit your macros, fine, if they don't well make a choice.
