I'm not a big fan of burning miles up on the treadmill or running down the road, but trail running sounds much more appealing. Doing some preliminary investigation into shoes and was hoping for some recommendations. I took the Brooks shoe finder test on their website and was given the Cascadia 13 as a result. Neutral shoe with cushioning.

Anyone have any recommendations? I'll be spending most of my time on stuff around Birmingham, Al, but I'm in Salt Lake City often.

Thanks,

All my friends who do trail running have always recommended Salomon shoes, for trail running.

I hear good things about Saloman but I never find them on discount.

My group has a variety of Brooks, NB, ASICS, and IN0V8. Brooks being the most popular.

I run in the Cascadias which are the heaviest but have a shitton of cushion. That rockplate is

Depending on the distance and terrain, I either wear Merrel Trailgloves or Altra Superiors.

I’ve always ran in Cascadias for more technical trails.

I run in NB Minimus Trails for typical LA trails though.

Slight hijack: Is there anywhere to run trails in south BR/St. George?

Did they ever fix the tightness/discomfort caused by that weird strap across the forefoot? I ran in them for a while, but had to switch to the Merrel trailgloves because of that stupid strap.

You guys that run in barefoot style shoes on trails blow my friggin mind. The trails in my hood require some sort of cushion or rock plate and I never thought that they were really that technical. I'd have to walk them if I was wearing minimus or vapor gloves and I'd still probably break both feet.

ETA: I run in Salomon Sense Rides on the trails.

That’s why I’m here asking. I made the mistake of running a couple of trail miles in my Brooks Pure Flows and I felt awful the next day. Feet were killing me.

I’ve done trails in street shoes a few times and been fine. Done a few times in other street shoes and slipped more than I’m proud of with some pain.

My Brooks ghosts made for decent trail shoes and my NBs did not.

That being said, I only wear those if I’m running trail by surprise.

If this is happening, you're probably already having a bad day. Trail running by surprise is called escaping in my lexicon.

With my work travels, I usually look up segment finder or hearmaps to see what’s in the area.

Sometimes I find a spot but it turns out that it’s trails but I couldn’t tell on the map. There’s also many times I show up at my kids’ practice and they say they’re going for an hour and half or two and that’s a perfect for a good 10k loop on my local trails close by.

That being said, “trails by surprise” was probably not the correct nomenclature.

Randomly I was in a Ross today when my wife was looking for clothes for my kids and I, as usual, wandered over to the shoe section. They had the Skechers Ultra Trail Max 2 and I was pretty darn impressed with the look and build of it as well as the GoRun Ride 6. Much sturdier than I thought they would be.

I shite on them previously but that was based on pictures and not holding one in my hands.

If my Cascadias didn’t have less than 100 miles on them I would have been tempted.

None that I know of. I love running trails, but driving 30 minutes to Hooper/Comite is just a buzzkill for me.

Salomon Shoes. It was around mile 11 of a 13 mile Spartan Beast that I saw people complaining about blisters when I realized that even though I was tired as hell my feet still felt good.

Brooks Cascadia and the newer Caldera are popular with trail running crowd.

Altra Lone Peak, Timp, Superior, and Olympus (depending on how much cushion you want) are popular with the Ultra and thru hiking crowds.

Hoka One One is popular with the Ultra crowd.

Salomon is popular among the old school trail crowd and Southeast trail crowd.

You really can't go wrong with any of these brands, just pick a shoe that fits your terrain and distance goals. And fits your feet.

I have some Altra Lone Peaks and Nike Terra Kiger. The Nike’s are great. I wish their normal running shoes were the same shape.

Altras are rad. I use the King Mountains.
Next to no cushioning, but fantastic traction, rockplate, light weight and super fast drying.
I dont even avoid puddles anymore.
