Suggestions on Whey Protein Powders
Posted on 5/23/24 at 5:59 pm

So I started working with a trainer and nutritionist and they've both suggested utilizing whey protein powder. Some of the recipes the nutritionist has given me has flavored (usually chocolate or vanilla) powder recommended as well.
Curious as to what y'all would suggest. Some things of note:
- I can have a sensitive stomach, so preferably something that won't be too hard on it.
- Would prefer no pre-workout/caffeine stuff due to caffeine restrictions.
TIA

Can’t go wrong with Optimum brand. Maybe get whey isolate.

Ghost and Dymatize are the best tasting in my opinion. Tons of flavors.

Optimum at Costco. $60 for 5.5# bag.

I’ve been through a few different brands and have settled on Earth Fed Muscle. Doesn’t upset my stomach and tastes great. I get the chocolate peanut butter.

I use unflavored Naked Whey. They have some flavored options but i haven’t tried them

Don’t even consider anything other than a whey isolate.
Avoid anything with fructose sweetening.
You could even go for one of the unflavored ones. That’s what I ended up doing.
I use Nutricost because I’m cheap, but I don’t really trust it.

Find some that are clean and have minimal ingredients. I suggest Naked or Transparent Labs.

I don’t know how often it happens, but Costco had a sale a few months ago. $20 off. It was amazing and I should have purchase three of them.

i like optimum and dymatize.
optimum is and old school classic and just all around good protein powder.
dymatize is a little more expensive, but i like their quality and they have some very tasty flavors. i actually enjoy drinking them. Legit look forward to it.
Get yourself a shaker cup with a mixing ball, 100% better than trying to mix it any other way (unless you like chunks of whey floating in your liquid of choice......you wont).
if by some chance you are one of those folks who are very very sensitive to whey and you just cant tolerate it their are other options. Pea isolate powders would be my suggestion to try next since they have all essential amino acids, albeit some in much lower levels compared to whey.

I use optimum nutrition.
Whey isolate alone shouldn't upset your stomach unless you have issues with milk. Whey is very quick and easy to digest, which is why it's good for powder in the beginning.
Protein powder isn't pre-workout. For what you want, just get Whey isolate and not anything fancier. Stuff advertised as pre or post workout blends is just going to have a bunch of extraneous stuff.
Protein powder and creatine are two things everyone trying to get in shape should be using and both are best when kept simple and standalone.

I will probably never stop buying Isopure no matter how expensive it gets, but whatever you settle on I would suggest trying low carb.
What allows me to not hate drinking protein is to mix it with Fairlife milk and a little bit of frozen banana such that it tastes like a milkshake while keeping the macros respectable. No protein powder of any brand is all that good in straight water, helps me to be able to add back carbs with things I enjoy as opposed to having sugar already in the mix.

I like ON Gold Standard vanilla mixed with half milk and half pasteurized egg whites as the liquid, and a scoop of peanut butter for extra protein and flavor.
I got cheap last month and bought the Six Star stuff at Walmart. Not bad for cheap, ON is better.

How much are you using whey?
If its more than a scoop or two, may want to try to find one without artificial sweeteners. I'll use the raw chocolate that Sam's carries. Normally blend in a nutra bullet with a banana and almond milk
Right now trying to get most my protein through food. Only use 1 scoop that I mix in with oats. Caramel Cookie Crunch from 5 Star Nutrition is one of the best tasting ones I've had.

It’d be just one scoop a day either with a shake or to mix in with oats or a snack recipe.

Forgot to mention, agreed on the above, nutrabullet is a must. Easy to add frozen stuff, no whey clumps, and just as easy to clean.

Don't know if this helps, but...

Thanks for all of the advice, folks. I ordered some Ghost samples from their website to try out. Plan to also pick up a smaller container of ON to try as well.
I'll report back once I try some.
