it isnt safe in august in south Louisiana. that asphalt can get too hot and burn their pads.
Who run's on asphalt that often? Most neighborhoods where people are running are concrete which isn't getting nearly as hot. Most asphalt is on a highway where you likely aren't running with a dog. And if it's that hot, you shouldn't be running very long with a dog anyway. I wouldn't run very far at all in the summer since they can't cool themselves. If I'm getting sweat stains in my shirt, it's time to stop since the dog can't sweat. In the winter, it's up to the dog's fitness.

You can run with them on pavement or concrete as long as it’s not too hot. It can burn their pads. I cannot run with mine. Those two retards will pull me in front of a car.

What type of dog? If it is a puppy let it mature and bones grow before bringing it out to run. My mature 3 years old GSP can not be run into the ground by a human...

that’s a good point too.
Our vet told us to wait til our Vizsla puppy was a year old before running her anything over a mile or so with us

Seriously? I suppose it does depend on the dog, breed, etc. My dog (a Sheltie) loves it, but I do keep it to 5 miles or under. He's always super excited to go. I do stop and let him sniff or do his bidness from time to time. And to socialize with other dogs/people. And of course it's good for his health.
Now if I could just get my fat cat to run with me.

Hate running with dogs. Always want to stop and smell stuff and mark their territory

How far is too far when getting started (both endurance wise and too much friction on their paws)?
Yes it's fine. As others have said, unless you're a veteran runner, your pup should be fine. He/she will start to lag if you push to far but more than likely you're gonna get pulled.
Also, after the first few runs, I would check his/her pads. One of my guys on his first runs got a crack in his pad but the tough shite just ran through it and I only knew about it because I looked for it after.

Do you ask your baby for permission to change its diaper to?
You’re not putting your dog through power cleans or anything, they likely love that shite unless you run them like a drill Sargent which doesn’t sound like the OP does

Well my husky is intent on running.

When my vizsla was 2-5 years old I ran him all the time. Usually evening or night in the summer just to avoid overheating. Breeder and vet recommended he be at least 18 months old before running on pavement. He loves it. Could easily keep up with me on 4-5 mile runs and we were pacing 7 minute miles or less. I didn’t run him like that in the summer too often though bc I would feel like a shithead if I hurt him. He’s 8 now and still can get after it especially in the cooler months. Great dog to run with too. Tracks and paces with me, never fighting him and he stays focused on the run.
