Is it safe to run on pavement or concrete?

How far is too far when getting started (both endurance wise and too much friction on their paws)?

How old/healthy is the dog? Just take it easy and watch the dog. She/he will indicate if they are tired if they start to lag.

Honestly if you are out of shape and just starting out running the dog will be fine but if you are a runner you need to ease them into it.

How big a baw are you? Are you in shape and likely to leave the dog in the dust? If you're a common rice and gravy eating baw then I wouldn't worry about wearing out your dog

I should get some for shack.

Op, dog’s paws are pretty tough. Unless you have been carrying it everywhere for it’s entire life it will be fine. Just slowly work your way up in distance.

I run my labs on a 4 mile route several times per week. They practically drag me on my face. They crave it like crack. Make sure they drink plenty of water, especially when its warm. Anything above 75 degrees out is dangerous. Try to run them past fountains or other water sources. Remember dogs don't sweat, they can only release heat through their mouth, ears and feet. Heat will kill them quick. Also, don't run them on hot pavement it will burn/damage their paw pads.

Running on concrete should be limited. You can cause severe damage to your dogs pads, through blistering in hot weather, or just wearing them off all together.

I take my 80lb American Bulldog running twice a week on concrete. She can only go about 1.5 miles.

I used to use shoes but they irritated her paws more than the concrete.

Start out running at a place where they have dog water fountains. When i first started bringing my dog he would get tired about 2.5 miles in. They'll let you know if they need a break.

I take two of my dogs on bike rides of about 3 miles for their weekend exercise. One almost sprints the entire distance while they other has a fast trot (faster than I could probably keep up jogging). Dogs' paws are tough - only concern I might have is if you are talking about a younger dog. Not sure at what age their paws firm up. It may be from birth!

The canine is the only other species, besides humans, that evolved to run long distances hunting prey. Of course, the breeding of dogs for specific purposes has significantly changed that trait. I would strongly recommend that you consult with your vet about your dog. Its breed may or may not be suited for running with you.

Depends on the dog breed. A trip to the mailbox and back is enough for some bulldogs. On the other hand a GSP or Vizsla can easily crack 6-7 miles.

Trashy. Dog just wants be with you and you run them? Dog don’t have a say. Stop being scared and lonely and exercise yourself. Leave the dog out of it. They have the natural instincts to do what they have to do, don’t need to drag them along without consent.
