I've read a couple of articles that reference studies where problem drinkers were able to reduce alcohol consumption through edibles. Anyone have any experience with this?

It makes sense someone would drink less. For instance, I have this friend that had an edible when the baseball game started tonight. An hour and a half in and he is finishing his first beer. He would have had 2 or more by now.

Definitely drink less when on cannabis. The problem is that I eat way more. Like… uncontrollable eating.

I'll have one beer if I take a gummy. Being crossfaded by drinking too much is worse than being drunk. It helps to experience how awful that is first so you know what to avoid next time.

Problem drinkers are going to drink to where it’s a problem. That may be less when they take an edible but it’s still going to be a problem.

In 2016 I was out in Seattle for a work conference. I used to smoke weed in HS and some in early college. I was a stoner. But once I got out of it (around 20 yr old), I’d rarely smoke… And for most of my adulthood, I rarely smoked weed.

Then in 2015 in Seattle I had to go to a dispensary… I haven’t smoked in forever, but the kid in me had to go see a dispensary. {Note I I just ripped a bong hit so this is a little wordy). I left w/ a vape pen. I hit it a few times and called my wife to tell her I think I may have solved my snoring issues.

I was a heavy beer drinker before that.. ie drink a 12pk of Miller Lite Fri, Sat, and drank some during the week. Even though I always exercised, my diet sucked. First I had to cut my alcohol consumption 85%. Then I had to clear my house of any snacks. Then I got into keto and fasting.

Since 2017, I’ve been a daily user and I had to learn the Jedi mind trick of not snacking while I get high every night.

But I’m so happy that i”ve cut my beer consumption. Edibles kill my craving for beer. If I drink, I’ll drink 2-3 beers, and it’ll be worthwhile… at a social event, not some random Tuesday. I treat beer like a cheat meal. I prepare by fasting before or planning to after.

I’m in my late 40s. I treat my drinking nights like Tiger Woods plans his golf events. I look at a calendar and see if there are consecutive weekends of social events… if there are, I make sure to pay back what I owe…

I’d recommend concentrates over smoking bud. Just my opinion.

I have a shitload of experience. If you are a real alcoholic like me that won’t work and if it did work the thc would become the problem at some point. I will say that once I got sober and worked the steps the obsession for alcohol was removed. I’ve used THC in sobriety and can take or leave it now. But in my experience marijuana maintenance won’t work.

ETA

I haven’t read the thread yet but I suspect there are baws with much different experience with this than me. Everyone’s path is there own. Some guys are just problem drinkers and not alcoholic at least not to the point I was. All that said there is nothing wrong with giving it a try. It might be a good barometer for your status as an alcoholic or just drinking too much. Best of luck.

If I take an edible before my first drink then I’ll have maybe two drinks tops and get to bed early. If I’ve had a drink before taking one then I’ll still cut back and get to bed at a decent time. It’s helped a lot with me with getting leaner through Keto and exercise, if I do want to snack then I’ve made sure to have healthy protein-packed snacks on hand in my house.

tried it several times; I like the idea of less volume, less calories, no hangover (on the rare occasion I overdo it) ...but MJ just doesn't do much for me as I don't care for the particular buzz no matter which strain I try, I prefer the buzz from alcohol

I’m currently doing this.

I got my first real job a couple months ago. Drinking hasn’t ever been a serious issue for me but I do enjoy it and was able to drink any night of the week, if I wanted, for basically my entire adult life(I’m 33).

The change of pace was a challenge at first. I absolutely hate being hungover and refuse to work hungover so drinking Sunday-Thursday is off off limits for the first time in my life.

A buddy of mine bought me 3 bottles of marijuana gummies and it has changed my life. Any urge to even begin sipping an alcoholic beverage to get drunk is completely gone when I’m using marijuana. It’s just too much work to pound that many drinks and the two don’t make me feel good.

And the biggest thing is my sleep, which is the life changing part. Since starting edibles, I’m getting flawless sleep and it’s enhanced nearly every aspect of my life.

ETA: I typed life way too many times in this post

You go ahead and get too drunk and high and let me know if it’s a problem after that

It’s a REALLY terrible state to be in.

The only issue I have with edibles is the commitment: There is no “slightly buzzed” with edibles, and they take a while to kick in and they last a long time.

I can have a single beer and an hour later it’s metabolized and if I need to drive or do something important then it’s not an issue. You take an edible and you’re done for the night in terms of driving or dealing with emergency stuff.

I 100% agree that if my choice is being hammered on booze or high then edibles all day long. But up I can’t call off the dogs of war once you’ve ingested it haha

^ I don't disagree at all, the "challenge" w/ edibles is that 5mg or 10mg doesn't map directly to 1 or 2 beers at 6-8% ABV because cannabis hits very differently than alcohol. My wife seems to require a lot more to have any effect than I do, but for alcohol we're exactly flipped. And then there seems to be inconsistency of potency where I've had a 10mg gummy and feel nothing or a 5mg gummy and I'm out for the night ... all from the same brand/batch.

Maybe we just have a longer experience period for alcohol and so have a finer grasp on how much does what and for how long based on what/how much I've eaten.

A friend of mine, for whom cannabis is his go-to, once told me that if a particular dosage has made me loopier than intended, I should pop a couple ibuprofen to mitigate (not eliminate) the degree of buzz. I haven't tried that though so YMMV .

Read the history as to why we started the war on cannabis originally.

It’s the most racist, shitty, underhanded wipipo BS I’ve ever read. And I’m a middle aged white guy. And the media and politicians lied back then too.

I’ve seen a bunch of people do some really dumb and violent things drunk- myself included. But I’ve never seen someone stoned do anything other than being really relaxed.

Try a gummie. Seriously.

Because of a loophole in the 2018 Farm Bill, real no joke THC gummies are available legally in all 50 states- delivered to your door courtesy of the US Postal Service.

The just get the Delta 9 THC from hemp and not from the marijuana plant- so there we go with genius politicians again.

Marijuana and Psilocybin are much more enjoyable than alcohol for me.
