Let’s say you workout 4 days each week, M T Th F, leaving rest days S W Sa. You typically drink 3 nights each week, nothing crazy, just 2 or 3 glasses of wine.

Would it be better to consume alcohol on your rest days before workout days, so Wednesday and Friday? Saturday is, of course a rest day with no workout following.

Or, would it be better to consume alcohol on workout days before a rest day, so Tuesday and Sunday? Saturday again being a rest day with no following workout.

In my mind, the former is better than the latter. The logic being that your muscles have already had sufficient time to recover and grow, and the alcohol, if consumed moderately shouldn’t greatly impact the next day’s workout. Conversely, drinking after a workout with a following rest day May hinder growth and recovery.

Of course, it’d be better to abstain completely, but which is better given the scenario?

I’m sure a bunch of people post saying it’s bad but maybe check in the trt thread and see if they’re posting in there too. Correlation or causation?

This is less scientific than intuitive, but I struggle mightily if I have to do a hard resistance workout (legs, back, etc.) while even slightly hungover (10+% drop off in performance). I don't have much of a problem doing cardio, even somewhat intense cardio, after a couple of bourbons.

I'd be interested in if there were scientific weight one way or the other.

Not so much scientific study but I started using a cpap and tracking my sleep almost a year ago. I can see a notable trend in my sleep score/resting HR and amount of time till recovery on my Garmin watch after just two bourbons before going to bed.
The study is still in its infancy but I’m pretty sure it’s a fact I will continue with the study and will accept any funds or bourbon to continue it for the next several years.

What does it indicate?

I’ve noticed my shoulder doesn’t bother me as much if I have a few drinks before bed. Probably because I pass out and don’t move at all during the night.

Wish I could do that. I snore when I drink and my wife ribs me all night.

lol it shows deep sleep and interruptions in rem sleep. So my normal night of sleep in 8hr with a cpap will be ~ 75-85 sleep score
No cpap 40-50
Cpap and 2 bourbon~ 50-55
Half bottle of bourbon and cpap 25-30

I'd rather doing it before a rest day. Even one or two beers messes with my sleep.

I think you should not look at it as, “what can I get away with”. It is poison. Any amount of it negatively affects performance, inflammation, and recovery. If you absolutely must drink, studies shows that the negatives of alcohol are not linear with volume, and separating intake from exercise and sleep is beneficial. If you have 1 or 2 at 5 pm you’ll be better off vs having 3 or 4 at 10 pm. Also, having 1 drink 7 days per week is different than having 7 at once.

What bigbuckdj said.

There's nothing wrong with knocking a couple back when you're in a fitness routine, but it is always going to have a negative impact on the next day's performance, or even the day after depending on how much you consume and what you consume (and your age).

I don't hardly drink anything but a few beers on the weekend. Maybe 4 on a Saturday. But that is usually after a workout and I don't do my next workout until Sunday evening.

I used to consume a couple of beers a couple of nights a week and I could tell it sapped me some during my workouts the next day. When I cut all of that out, my performance improved greatly, with all other things remaining the same.

Now if I could only get my sleep right. That is the last component for me. But, work, wife, and kids...
