Keep your elbows in. Pushups done properly are fine. People, especially women and men with no experience benching or in .mil, tend to flare their elbows way out, which can put the shoulder at a disadvantage.

Demo of wrong way and right way

I’m 48, 6’1 and 185 pounds. I typically do 2 sets of 55 pushups/day. How would one rate that? I feel like I have pretty good strength and endurance.

I knocked it out the other morning. That second set of 55 was a mofo

I was like why 55 instead of 50. For some reason those last 5 kicked my arse on that second set.

About a year ago I tried to warm up with 1 set of 75 before a chest work out. It wrecked my whole workout and I had to drop weight on my bench big time.

I can do about 25 per set. Proof that I need to do more push ups

Thats great. I like slow, controlled pace pushups as well which does a good job of constant tension. Bands are also good for this

I knew there was a thread about this...for some reason I decided today to do 50 pushups at a time to see how it would go. It's hard, but I did 2 sets of 50 and then on the 3rd set things died on #40, I'm done. I need to work this into my mid-week routine to build up the pushup stamina. I bench on Saturday mornings, so it should work. I think I will be sore later/tomorrow.

ETA 32 on 4th set, not sure why I tried

Haven't tried to do any long sets of pushups in many years. I could probably get 1 set of 50 unbroken but would hit a big wall in 2nd set. Like anything else, if you train specifically to do more pushups, you can increase max a lot in a few weeks.

I’m 52 6’ 3” at 215 and can get 50 on a good day. Might can get 30 in a second set with 10 min rest. Although tbh I’m not sure my reps are full range of motion. Close enough though.

But 55 for 2 sets is damned respectable!

I’ve always heard pushups would mess your shoulders up over the long term.

No. If you do fricked up pushups, with your elbows acting like wings on a 777, sure. But do them properly, you just profit. Elbows in. Millions of privates agree.

I'd rate that as pretty good. I know guys who are jacked to the gills that gas out well before that.
