Protein being first, but if I’m looking build muscle and maybe get some other nutrients with the lowest calories, what is a good protein powder to buy?

Whey isolate will have the most protein per calorie.

Any particular brand that’s got it better than the others or does it just come down to a price and taste standpoint?

Whey isolate if you're just looking for straight protein but if by "good stuff" you mean youre looking for a mass gainer then thats not the same thing. Someone posted a website before that lists all the 3rd party testing for various supplements. I'll try to find it. But looking on there is a good option if you're concerned about purity. I use Truenutrition.

Is the rest of your diet so clean that this matters?

I have had a hard time getting the amount of protein I need so I feel like it would be more if your diet wasn’t clean that one would need a low cal protein source?

I use iso100 by dymatize. There might be some better but it's done well for me so I have no reason to look.

Sounds like you just need some whey isolate

Isopure is pretty much straight protein

Cleanlabel is who does the testing
True nutrition is gonna be your best bet along with transparent labs usually as far as purity and not spiking
Calorie for calorie peptopro is the best but retarded expensive
Any good whey isolate will be next
Then your egg protein, whey concentrate etc
Look on true nutrition for values

Transparent Labs grass fed whey isolate is the best I've ever had and the cleanest indredients.

Looks like a good product but a little low on the protein for me. Also, once you get into the flavored options it has more ingredients. Would want to what the organic flavoring is made of.

13g does seem low per serving. Could just drink straight Fairlife and get that, I think.
My understanding is you need 20-25g of good protein (whey or meat) to get the 3g of leucine needed for muscle protein synthesis.
I switched to unflavored whey isolate recently and now prefer that to any flavored I’ve ever tried.

Exactly what Transparent Labs does. Whey Isolate, cacao, and stevia.
