This is what Day 1 (Test Your Mettle) said:

Deadlift 3 3 3 3 2-3
40% 50% 70% 80% You Pick

I love days where it's heavy deadlifts. I feel so strong doing deadlifts. I had fun doing the PR Party at the end of the month

That was a great program , I will probably run it again in the early fall when I'm not in a deficit.

My son and I when the workout says 87% or higher in on deadlift days always end up going up to 100% TM or higher.

For knowing when to retest bench/squat TMs, I like to try for AMRAPs on the last sets of an exercise throughout the month. Then I’ll plug that lift into strengthlevel.com and see what it comes out as a 1rm. Like this month benching (pump city tends to be high reps low %s) I have my TM set to 256.1, which is 90% of 285 lb 1rm.
Working out, I’ve done 205x10, 225x8, 185x16 this month, which all estimate 280-288 1rm. That seems to be about right, so for Pool Season I’ll bump it to 290 1rm and a 261 TM and keep on going.

For deadlifting, I actually pulled over my 1rm when we PR partied, so I adjusted it up more based on that. I find estimating 1rm from doing high rep deadlifts isn’t very accurate so I just max out every few months when I feel frisky.

I don't feel frisky enough to do this. I need to though. Maybe this weekend before we start the next program.

My issue is not having enough weights at home. I only have 385lbs but I'm going grab some 25's and maybe 35's from my BIL this weekend which will be plenty.

Working out with a 19 y/o probably helps.

I also sometimes run PPSA plans that don’t have deadlifts (Big Bench; db strength) or deadlift every other back day (pump city). So when the programs with heavy deadlifts like strongville are wrapping up I’ll go hard since I won’t be deadlifting again that hard for a while.

I have a theory that injuries on the DL are more frequent for garden variety lifters because they are just much more accessible to strive for....it takes a lot of balls to throw way too much weight on a squat, take the bar on your back, and attempt a lift. Very few people are going down that road, if anything people short change themselves on squats a lot from an effort perspective.

DL on the other hand is a LOT less intimidating - just attempt to pick up the weight, if you can't, put it right back down. For a lot of lifters it won't even move if they can't lift it. It just seems so trivial and approachable.

I think it's also part of the reason why most people's DL tends to grow so much faster that squat when they first start lifting, they actually push themselves because it's less intimidating. On the other hand, the impetus to not just slap an extra half plate on there and see what happens is dramatically reduced...So you just get a lot more people attempting lifts that are way beyond their capability and putting themselves in potentially higher risk scenarios. It's much rarer to see that on a squat simply due to the intimidation factor.

Y’all’s discussion made me remember this post from Reddit. I decided to post it for some of the newer lifters, because I know we will get to big back billy in a few months and that volume will be nuts.

Never thought of DLs like that but that’s definitely the case.

It’s nothing for me to put a 25 on each side after a heavy lift, but id be more weary to the same on a squat.

For some reason doing pushups right after farmers carry was like a cheat code. It felt like there was no gravity for the first 10 or so.

84 minutes for me today including the 5 minute walk at the end so we were pretty close.

And it was an AMRAP of pushups too! I got barely 10!

They felt crazy light to me for some reason. I did 20. When we did the ones during DB Strength 10 felt like a lot.

If you’re doing 8x10@60% on bench then just hit 2 more for GVT haha

Pump city day 19 kicked my arse today. i went heavy on the 5x5 bench and then the high reps on incline db press and db shoulder press wrecked me. It was much tougher than the triple AMRAP sets last time.

German volume training. It’s usually 10 sets of 10 with 60s rest between sets. For it to be really effective you need enough weight that you can’t get 10 reps every set; 60% might be a bit light for that but it would be a hell of a pump in any case

That’s my plan for tomorrow afternoon. I’ll be sleeping in tomorrow. Had too many to drink tonight watching the LSU game

Tested maxes today instead of running Oak Tree. 3 months into lifting and I'm happy with the numbers. This was definitely not optimal testing since I did all 3 in one session and went heavy on deads yesterday.

Squat: 2@255
Bench: 2@205
--(Didn't push a 3rd rep since I didn't have a spotter)
Deadlift: 1@305

Maxes pre-JUJ. These were spread out over 2 days and I had a spotter.
1@255
2@205
1@265

strengthlevel.com has these at 262.3/210.9/312.4 (based on 3@295 deadlifts)
