I have 2 compression fractures in my spine so I can't lift for 3 months... What are some things I can do to stay in shape. Doc said walking and stationary bike (if sitting completely upright) should be fine. I'm about 5'11 165 pounds and would like to stay around this weight, decent shape... you can tell I workout some but you can also tell I like beer lol. Any advice on what to do is appreciated!

Three months isn't so long. Listen to your doc. Maybe ask if you can work with a physical therapist to maintain strength during recovery.

I suggest walking and stationary bike.

I have been doing this just didn't know if there was anything else I could that wouldn't put any strain on my back.

I asked about physical therapy and he said he wouldn't suggest it because it would involve bending down and that will put strain on my back.

Ask the doc about bodyweight movements (pull-ups, push-ups, lunges). You can stay in pretty good shape for 3 months if BW movements are okay.

Leg exercises would seem to be ok as would light bicep curls with your back straight. Not a doc.

How did your back get messed up in the first place?

Just eat healthy over the next 3 months.

Sure you may lose any strength you recently gained, but as long as you don't turn into a Big Mac eating machine the next 90 days then you should be good.

A recumbent bike (stationary or wheeled) is very easy on the back and can get your body moving without putting strain on your back. If you are close to Auburn I have a friend getting rid of a nice one (wheeled bike not a stationary).

I have a gym at work but thanks for the offer. Looks like it's walking, stationary bike, and some light arm stuff with straight back. I eat pretty healthy for the most part already so that shouldn't be a problem.

My bad. As the all-boards expert on any topic, I’m glad you entered the thread. Please teach away.

some doctors literally have no idea what PT entails

You can't do leg exercises without bracing your midline and he has a fricked up spine bad enough that he can't even run. It's pretty simple.

Ask your doc if he is a movement specialist or a surgeon. PT’s can probably help you more at this point than your MD

I mean he can’t put a bar on his back but you think you don’t naturally brace every time you get up and down from a chair? Hell what if he sneezes or coughs? Let’s hope his back doesn’t explode

I agree, if his back is that bad those are certainly possibilities.
