This was one of the recommended exercises for the IT Band injury I'm fighting. As a 46 year old man, I find this bullshite nearly impossible. Been fighting it for a week.

Google progressions for pistol squats. There are a bunch of them none of which have worked for me.

Do reverse lunges or split squats. Pistol squats are more about mobility and stability than building strength or mobility.

If you have IG look up Squat University, he has some videos of progressions you can do to work up to it.

Best way to do it is use the corner of a wall. Go down on your own and when you need to grab the wall.

Yep. All about hip flexor and ankle mobility. I could always do them on my right leg, but had to work on mobility for my left.

Try these. Also I'll throw in a single leg partial box squat. Sit on a bench, box, etc that is pretty high up and just stand up using one leg. Prevent your knee from collapsing inward - actually think about pushing the knee out from the midline slightly to engage your medial glutes, etc. Maintain the arch in your foot as you press the foot into the ground. You can just lower the box as strength and stability increase.

I just don't really see the point in training for pistol squats if you can't do them.

There are other solid unilateral exercises. It's difficult to progressively overload pistol squats. It takes a lot of learning.

For most people who are just looking for general health, the simpler the learning curve, the better. The best exercise is one that takes minimal learning and delivers a lot of stimulation. I think reverse lunges and split squats are much easier to learn and actually give better results.

This is where I am right now. I tried a different progression last night and it was comical.

I understand what yall are saying about different exercises. This one was recommended and I had never heard of it. My attempts to do it have been a clownshow and I thought I'd share.

Great for hip flexor strength, leg strength, ankle mobility, glutes, hamstrings, even calves. Why wouldn’t you do them?

I’m way too old to think about doing that.

Because there are other things that give better benefits and require less time to learn.

Cause you look like you're about to sit on some man meat for the first time.
