FYI - in recent times a lot of people have figured out that trying to change your bodies natural gait is a major recipe for injury.
I changed mine from heel strike to fore foot. With that said, you can’t heel strike in Xero’s or Vivo’s. It also took a shitload of calf raises and various foot exercises to get there. It was not an easy process after years of neglect.

Physical therapist told me to try adding some distance so I set out for 10, ended up doing 7 before the pain was a little too intense. Going to talk to them about it and take a few weeks/months off to heal up and focus on school and family i guess. I appreciate the tips and help from all you guys, I know almost nothing about running, just started doing it to deal with getting sober and not being able to for awhile seems daunting but oh well.

Any reason they told you to increase distance when it seems like you haven’t been out of the clear pain wise?

I told them about slower runs on flat surface being less painful and about the footstrike snafu, and they wanted me to test it out. Im coming up on the end of 6 weeks of PT though, so I just plan on doing the stretches 3x a week myself and taking a month or so off running. When it first started I took 2 weeks off but it may not have been enough.

Both PT and ortho have been adamant i wouldn't have to rest, ortho gave me a couple injections and told me to keep running. PT has said the same, but something has got to give.

Something doesn’t add up, 2 separate people with doctorate level (and up) training told you to keep running even after you told them you were in pain?
Posted on 8/17/25 at 10:34 am to Lakeboy7
Exactly. Two ways to see this. Either Runsadmin isn’t being honest with himself and medical professionals or needs to find new medical help.
Actual report will be they said run slow and short but he tried to run 10 miles when he’s only being running maybe 15-20 a week oh and avg HR 160.

The only time I've been told to not run was the day I got the injection in bursa, told me to wait til the next day due to injection site being sore. Haven't seen ortho since i was referred to PT.
I was referred to a PT out in my nowhere town, where the guy i got assigned to is a student that should graduate end of next year. Im the first IT band patient hes had.
Usually the PT sessions are warm up, then I get a timer with stretches/exercises to do.
I've explained that sometimes I can go 3-4 miles with no issue sometimes, and then I have days where it's intense pain from the jump.
PT said that's strange, to do the therapy, try again and report back.

I've found that PTs fall way short when it comes to stuff like IT band in runners. They basically assign you a therapy that you could pull off the internet, do some dry needling and foam rolling, and that's it. Do you have resistance bands? I can recommend some exercises that knocked mine out.

I feel I've wasted 6 weeks and 700 bucks in copays. I do have resistance bands, will try anything. I don't have a reason to be dishonest with anyone, the only goal is to get back running. If that means not running for x amount of time, i will do that no issue.
I get 3 afternoons a week where someone watches my daughter, so pre injury i would run 10 one day, then 5 the other 2 days keeping me right at 20 mpw. Sometimes I would stretch that long day to 14 or 15, but time became an issue.
As far as the 160 HR goes, it's been like that since I started a couple years ago and I thought it was normal. I've got a buddy that I run with every blue moon and we will have conversations when we run and I'm able to talk pretty normal between 160-165. If that is a mistake, that's something that can be corrected pretty easily.

If your leg hurts and you pace at that HR is on 9:30-10 then yeah probably shouldn’t bc you’re out running your physical ability and I’m not even a pro HR training guy. But what the F do I know.
May be personal question but how much do weigh runsadmin?

Here's what a buddy sent me for my IT band a while back. I'm posting from my phone so if this doesn't format correctly let me know.

Bookmarked, thanks man. Going to take probably until mid October off and do these several times a week.
Ill try to find some guides on how to come back correctly from injury as well as some appropriate training plans so this doesn't happen again.

If you really feel like you can't run without pain, yeah take that time off. The advice i've always heard and followed is if you can run relatively pain free (like the pain is below a 4/10) then you can keep running while adding in the rehab exercises. I'd hate for you to lose the progress you've made by taking an extended time off unless that's really what you need.

This past week is the first time I’ve run more than once in a week since April because of IT Band issues. At first, I just tried rest but wasn’t getting anywhere. My knee continued to hurt and it was getting frustrating.
In early June, I did a little research and I did some of these exercises but I also had an MD recommend clamshells and another runner recommended a yoga kind of thing he called a Figure 4 while laying on my back. Twice a day I did the stretches and did the exercises at least once per day. It was harder to stay committed to it than it was to go running because it was tedious and repetitive.
I finally felt good enough to start doing a weekly workout on an elliptical and then finally felt good enough to jog 5k. I’ve been doing a weekly run and have now worked up to a slow 10k. My knee hurt some the first couple of times but it hasn’t hurt in several weeks.
It was hard to do all the stretching and exercises when I’d see other folks out walking and jogging but it paid off. Just take it slow with the knowledge you might not actually run for a couple of months. You’ll be getting back into it when the weather starts cooling down and you’ll really enjoy it.
Good luck!

I got a head cold this week, so I audibled and ran 6 miles on Thursday at a SUPER slow pace and then...
ran 31.25 miles with 6,500ft of elevation gain in the Smokey Mountains on Friday for fun
I would have run another 8 miles this week to round out my mileage for the week to 45, but my head cold is still "there" and I don't want to push it, so that's been it this week. Hopefully the cold clears up and I'll be back to my normal routine by Tuesday.
