3 miles at 10:52
Anyone have an opinion on the minimum mileage I should try to get weekly to be able to launch into a 12wk 50 mile training plan?
I’m thinking 20 miles or so but just looking for what some others may have done.

You mean a plan that maxes at 50/week or a plan for a 50-mile race?

If you want to be peaking at 50 miles a week, you should probably be doing 30+ consistently first.

If you want to consistently be doing 50 miles a week... same, but just be forewarned, I run a LOT compared to a lot of people, and 50 miles per week is even somewhat brutal on me after a few weeks.

If you are thinking about doing a 50 mile race... just go to ChatGPT and tell it to write you a plan, when you first start off, in order to keep up with it you will be having to run so slow it won't matter and will build up your low aerobic base to a point that's great for a 50 mile race.

------------------

Did 8 miles @8:26 today, actually felt amazing now that my head cold is almost gone

Probably going to do kind of a modified "peak week" this week since I got a 31 mile run in last week, going to get anywhere from 45 to 52 miles this week with only a 15 mile long run.

Yeah looking at a 50 mile race. Ran a marathon and a 50k this year and it was a steady build up based on a marathon training plan. Looking to now somewhat take off but keep a fitness level during “offseason” to be able to just jump right into 12wk block training plan I have.
Google helped some I’ll try chat and see what it says just curious what others were doing.

what is your mileage currently looking like on your "build blocks" ? (about mileage on your standard week) - what was your peak week during your 50k?

~35 with a long run of 18 or back to back 10 milers.
Edit: chat gpt says 20m weekly as a minimum.

hmm I would try to get to the high end of the 20s if you can. Maybe do a 3 week build to the mid-20s, then a 3 week build to the high 20s. If you want as it cools off you could also do another build just before your training plan starts to the low 30s.

I personally would not want to ramp up that fast. Maybe you are significantly younger than I.

Yeah I think holding 20 for the next couple of months and the a slow build up like you suggest may be my plan. Looking at a march race so still plenty time but just trying to not have the high volume during the heart of hunting and football season lol.

When you say 20, you mean your total mileage for the week is 20 or your long run is 20? I saw your other post said you were doing an 18 miler for your 50k build up, isn't that like 50% of your weekly volume from the long run?

I built up to the mid 40s this summer before the whole diabetic thing. Basically adding a tiny bit of distance to a run here and there, then cut back every 4th week and get right back to it. It looked something like 25-28-30-26, 30-32-35-30, 35-38-40-34, 40-43-46-40. That's a pretty safe way to do it if you have the time. You can do all easy runs but I had 1 threshold workout per week when I was doing it.

I’m gonna try to get 20miles a week during the offseason.
I had maxed out my long runs at 18mile for my 50k in July. I was following a modified Hal higdon plan that I had used for a marathon in January.

Haven’t posted in a while but had some good news to share. In March 2024 I was diagnosed with fatty liver disease. I’m 6’-5” and weighed in at 268.5. I was had knee surgery for a torn meniscus and prior to that had AFib. Since then I got my shot together! Started couch to 5k and ran a few half marathons since then.
Had labs and ultrasound done this week and my dr told me I have zero signs of fatty liver disease! My weight today is 208.1. No AFib and knee is doing great. I have a half in October and a full in January that I’m preparing for. I’ve been averaging around 25 miles a week during the summer and plan to follow the plan from advanced marathon training of 18 weeks, peeking at 55 mpw.
My goal for the October half is under 1:40:00 and a 3:30:00 full. Life is good at 41 and it’s never too late to turn it around.

Good shite buddy. Keep up the good work.

Mile race tomorrow night. I have no idea what shape I'm in so I'm going to find out which kid is going for a 5:30 and latching onto him for as long as I can manage

Amazing news bro. Congrats on turning it around.

Did 17 with the run group this AM. Been a while since I’ve been. Good crowd, but most everyone did the 9 miles. I’ve not done that many miles in a day for a while. Been averaging 9-12 on my long runs. Noticed my zone 2 pace dropped from 10min/mile to 11:30min/mile right at the 12 mile mark. Guess I’ve conditioned myself to that mileage. Felt pretty good. Couple of twinges I need to work on, but nothing major.

5:48 for my mile. I went for it but like I thought, not in quite as good shape as I could be. Still 12 seconds faster than I ran at this race last year and I did it off of a weekly routine of one tempo and one long run with the rest easy. I think I'm happy with that but I'm looking forward to buckling down this fall and really getting in shape.
