17.5 today. Ran some weird deal in the 80/20 plan today. 140 HR for the whole distance, but incorporated 13 x .25 mile tempos at HR 160. Hip stiffened at about mile 13. Not nearly as bad as it used to be, but noticeable.
Half marathon about 30 days out.

Aubie:
what pace was the 140 HR rate and what was it at for the quarter mile tempo hitting 160? what is goal pace for HM?

140 pace is 10:30-11:30 for the first nine miles then jumps to 13ish after that. I find that interesting. It’s like my body flips a switch at nine miles.
160 pace is 8:30-9:30 depending on the terrain.
No goal for this HM as I’ve never run a race before. I’ve done the distance multiple times on my long runs. I’m thinking an 8min pace is realistic.

thanks for adding the paces. Now that I have HR reading watch, "accurate" or not, I'm intrigued to see how something like 80/20 training pans out come race day. i think my watch is "adjusting" the more i use it.
not knowing every detail or being a true expert but I would assume your hR increase at said distance of 9 miles is an overall endurance issue. just takes time to increase the distance or pace when your body hits the "switch". I would think fueling could impact this as well but fueling has always been my downfall so hard for me to really know.

Still find it hilarious that you’ve been running all these years with a watch that can’t track HR. Not that you need it but I didn’t think they made watches that DON’T track it, haha.
How did they 10 mile effort feel today with 1K’? Saw your HR was around 180, which would typically indicate a LT/tempo type effort? I have a feeling it didn’t feel that tough to you.
What’s your Marathon fueling look like?

Cool man! I figure they can’t hurt and find it really easy/convenient to get some strength and mobility in. There are SAM videos on YouTube explaining how to do them all (and hot chicks doing it, ha).

That’s the joke in my long run group. Everyone paces faster than me. Not sure why, but they are all training in the 8-9:30 range. They all stop multiple times for water and whatever else.
I never stop. No water. No fuel. Nothing. So, I end up catching them towards the end like a fricking turtle. Maybe I need to start?

Always appreciate the advice in this thread so I come bearing a noob question.
Training for my first marathon. Did my long run of 8 miles Saturday (usually doing them on the weekend) however this coming week is really busy with a lot of travel so today (Monday) was the best day schedule wise to get my long run in. Is there any detriment in backing them up like this? I did 8 Saturday, rest yesterday and started off this week with 9 today. I plan on doing 3-5-3 the rest of the week when able and then next week is a scale back week. So my next long long run won’t be until 11 miles probably 2 weeks from this coming weekend. Just want to make sure I’m not screwing myself here. Thanks y’all!

I bought a semi-fancy watch back in 2017 when built in HR was only on the super fancy. I'd still be rocking the old one by got the new one for Xmas.
sunday's 10 miler was pretty moderate feeling even with climbs 0.25 - 0.6 mile with grade 8-10%. maybe slightly higher effort than perceived since i ran 14 with 1200 the day before at 7:35. watch data from sunday shows 83% of run was at a pace threshold or lower but hr was 92% threshold or higher (54% anaerobic power being over 176). that just doesn't add up.
As far as fueling goes i'm not a good example. During marathon I probably eat 3 maybe 4 gels and hit the water / gatorade along the way. most of the water just ends up all over my shirt but i try. I ran 50k new years day on 2 gels and maybe 10 oz of water. This tendency to not eat / drink has lead to melt downs at 100-milers.

Wait, so your watch said that 83% of your run was below threshold pace, but 92% of it was above threshold HR? Because if I'm reading that right, that's why I stopped paying attention to heart rate

Anyone else running the half or full LA Marathon this weekend?

Depends on you really. The only caution I would give someone about mileage is don't dramatically increase it over a week/month. Moving the same mileage around some days wouldn't concern me.

I’m running the half. Will be my first ever “real” race. Ran the dress rehearsal a few weeks ago in 2:05, hoping for the same or better this weekend. Looking forward to it.

I'm running the half and hoping to run it in 2:15. It's my first half at 48 years old. Next year I would like the run the real deal after losing 30 pounds.

Anyone running Houston with me Sunday?
Weather has started to take a turn for the warm and trending upward.

Think the whole Believe in the Run crew is there and maybe Kofuzi too. Doing a shakeout run at Frost Town Brewing. Would definitely check out if I were there, but I’m a BITR fanboy

Ko was here in 2019 as well I believe. I ran a shakeout with him in Chicago in 2021. A lot more people showed up than I expected. Mostly stans who just want to be in his video and stick to the front of the pack with him.
Wouldn't mind chatting it up with the Believe in the Run folks though.

Best wishes to all running LA and Houston this weekend. I'm itching to have a race on the calendar but next 6 months will revolve around getting selected for Badwater again. Race field is announced feb 4th.
Kballa - how did your training block go since NYC? any major changes or discoveries? Goal for houston?

Decent I guess. We backed off the mileage on the long runs and tried to up the effort. Had a few long runs that just sucked (rain or cold). My best indication was a 17mi run where I ended up at GMP or faster for 2 hours. Felt good overall.
Goal A: 3:40
Goal B: 3:45
Goal C: PR, sub 3:52
