Hey guys, I’ve taken up running recently. I have a weak ankle due to a high school sports injury (high ankle sprain) then rolled it a few more times over the years, I guess due to it being weakened by that original injury. My question is…do people who run with weak ankles wear a brace or something while they run? If so, would anyone recommend a specific kind? I’m sure good running shoes would also help with this situation. I wear On Clouds now but also really liked my ASICS, might go back to those. I can feel myself leaning a bit to compensate for this weak ankle and feel like it could lead to another injury one day. Am I being paranoid? TIA.

I’ve never had an issue with ankles road running. I could see it being a problem on trails.

That’s good to know. Maybe it will just stay as is, with a slight weak feeling. I can definitely accept that.

I imagine it will strengthen over time. My knees gave me hell for a month or two after I started until they got stronger.

Ran a 5k time trial this morning for the Virtual Volvo Cars for Alex Million Mile 5K. It’s public to track my time (rolls eyes at Strava and NYRR). 15:37 and second place because the dude in first is a cheater. Little disappointing because I probably left 5 seconds on the track and it wouldn’t have mattered…

Sorry Burt, but I had to peak at the race you're talking about to see the cheating. #1 right now ran an entire 5k downhill with a loss of 965 ft of elevation.

I guess that's one way to game the system.

Yeah, I know it's sour grapes on me for sure, but frick... I have not been able to catch a single fricking break in racing since I've started this whole mess.

I view virtual races like golf scrambles- everyone ahead of me cheated one way or another unless I witnessed it myself.

I think I know what you’re talking about. There is a spot near Port Allen where you can make this happen.

there's a guy in my town who is very vocal in our running community. for some reason he's universally loved. he runs a lot of long distances, much more than i can, but it's a bunch of 50ks at 15-20 minute pace. he's also a major dick.

he had a post on strava a year or two back where he said "fastest mile and new KOM!!!"

it's a completely downhill section by his house that involves loops that you wouldn't make normally and he was literally the only one to ever run the segment. it was a pretty quick mile but not sub 6 or anything. all sorts of kudos and congrats. i'm not the best at long distance in my group of guys, but when it comes to a balls out sprint i'm the fastest, so a couple of guys in my group say go get the KOM and we'll buy you lunch and beer.

good lunch and the guy has never talked to me or interacted with me on strava since.

Not my best run this morning, but man did it feel good outside! Can’t wait for the next few days when it’s even a bit cooler

I started around 7 before the sun came up and it was pretty perfect at 59. By about 7:20 it had gotten a little humid but still felt great.

Nice. 57-60 degrees in the AM is what I’m looking forward to Thurs-Sat over here. I think it was 70 this morning, which wasn’t bad by any means & was a welcome relief from the oppressive heat/humidity.

7 miles this AM. Paced at 9:10 with an average HR of 162. Windy and rainy here this AM. Got started late. Hills tomorrow and a 5K on Saturday. I haven't done any speed work in quite a while.......

Oh, that's easy. It's because people that don't like the pain associated with running fast seem to think that running far is an equivalent and impressive analog. It's not. It's just social media posturing which is what strava is, social media. Gimme dem kudos!

Anyone can run 120 miles a week. Not everyone can do it with a sense of urgency.

How many calories does one burn running 15-20 minute miles for 50k?

I got a tempo run in this week. Felt aight. I have some intervals Friday morning that I'm looking forward to only because the weather should be nice (61 degrees, 7 mph NNE winds).

I'd imagine slightly more than doing it at walking pace.

Agreed. I have several brisk walks and slower jogs that I never put on Strava because they’re not really strenuous activities. They’re usually just killing time while kids are at practice. I just put things on Strava that I want to compare myself to.

I’m way off my 2019 numbers and paces, but as I try to get back in the game this fall, I like to compare real runs to where I was 2 or 3 years ago and try and get back to where I was.
