Quite a few of yall stretched it out this morning! Nice job by everyone this week.
Ive got my first trail run set up for 5:30pm today.
Im not committing to a distance, just going to run and see how it feels, I would like to get in 5 if there is any chance in hell.

The weather here isn't cooperating, so I'll be moving my 12-miler to tomorrow morning. Still adjusting to keto anyway, so it's not a major issue.

Anyhow good races y’all! 3N finished a run without complaining so that’s huge IMO.
There was much complaining at the time.
I genuinely don’t cuss in real life much but when I saw that last hill you can see on Strava I yelled “another f*cking hill?”
It would be different if I were actually a good runner. But I’m not.

A couple of challenging running days up here in Chicago, but got em in. Pretty wet/windy weekend. Today’s run was supposed to be a little quicker paced for 9 of the miles, but my legs are shot as we’ve been walking all day since we’ve been here, eating and drinking good, etc. Trying not to stress the running too much and enjoy a little vacation. Of course tomorrow (off running day) is supposed to clear up and be nice. My wife and I plan to do some biking and I may swim a couple laps in the am.

Ran my first half marathon distance trail run today. Did it in 2:47. Not great, but I'll take it.
Any advice on eating during the run? What do y'all think about energy gel? I didn't do this and I hit a wall at about mile 9 and just struggled terribly to the end.

I am tired of this heat. Damn.
I was supposed to get in 5 miles this AM, but cut it short at mile 4. Got a little dizzy and light headed walking back to the truck. Got home and ate and hydrated. Feel fine now but really looking forward to cooler weather.

I hit walls usually around mile 8-10 regardless of trails or not.
I shake it up on nutrients. Stinger waffles, cliff bars, GU gel, cliff gel, etc. Usually do it around :45 and 1:30 of a run. Yesterday I was actually good on energy the whole time outside of smacking my head on a tree and being disoriented for a mile or so.
I also did icy hot in there and that actually refreshed the legs a good bit. Did get it where it wasn’t supposed to go.

Ouch.
Yeah I was making great time up until mile 9. Simply inexperience on my part. I do see Jelly Belly makes energy beans. I'll be trying those.
I have a 25k race in a couple weeks. My first ever. Can't wait.

Bummed my trail run got cancelled today.
I went ahead and did a comfort zone 5 miles @ 8:36 solo. I haaaaate running by myself, the boredom will kill me before any heat or muscle related injury

I haven't needed to use gels or anything unless I was running over 15 miles. I've raced all of my half marathons without any gels or anything, and I never stopped for water in my fall halves. I have used 2 gels during marathons and some Gatorade at every other aid station. Keeping my electrolytes balanced has been a bigger challenge for me during long runs, especially in the summer time.
It's probably more about time, however. If your trail run was technical, that would have an impact. It looks like at your pace you would have hit that 2 to 2.5 hour mark at around miles 9-11.
If you want to use some fuel during your runs, I suggest trying a few different types. People respond differently to them. Some are easier on the stomach than other. It's also good to practice with them a couple of times on training runs if you are training for distances longer than a 1/2 Marathon.
Shot blocks are too sweet and chewy for me. I prefer the gels. It's good to have some water or sports drink to wash them down with if that's possible. I try to time them with my aid station stops during a marathon. I assume you are bringing fluids along with you on your long trail runs.
I am hoping that I won't need any extra fuel during long runs or races now that I am on a keto diet.

I do Crossfit, as well as run

I try to periodize my weight training in conjunction with my running. I do higher reps to put on some muscle mass between cycles and early in my training cycles while my running volume is lower. I transition to lower reps and higher weight after a few weeks into my cycle to focus on strength. Then, I add in some olympic lifts, plyometrics, and low rep near max lifts during my sharpening period to build power and maximize muscle recruitment. I aim to do 5 weight training sessions a week, rotating push/core, pull/core, legs/core, rest.

Same here for races as well. Otherwise I don’t fuel for any training run no matter the length even long runs in the morning when my body is in, wait for it... ketosis. Bet a bunch of baws from that other thread just got erections and don’t know why.

Didn’t realize you were a Keto warrior, Burt. Thought you were a carb monster.
