I think my head lamp has bit the dust. Anybody have a recommendation on a good headlamp? I’ve been using a battery powered tac lamp but it won’t stay on anymore.

Taking a much needed rest day today. Got in a grueling 4 yesterday, fulllll of intervals. My ankles and knees are screaming.

Finally got my $35 gps watch in, I will test it out at my track session Wednesday.

I will be in Fort Morgan next week, really looking forward to getting some good runs in new scenery.

A bit concerned my running days are coming to an end. I've got a small herniated lumbar disc that I have had for over 25 years. It has never caused me too much trouble, just some occasional stiffness and a little pain. My ortho wanted me to stop running a decade ago, but I've ignored him. But lately I've been experiencing some left leg weakness. I've fallen a few times when I thought I had lifted my left foot up enough to get over a root or stone while running, but had not. I also am having more trouble lifting my left leg back to stretch. I love running, but I do not want to develop permanent leg drop. I've got a dr appt coming up. I know he will want me to stop running. Hopefully he won't also suggest surgery. Ran 5 this morning. Dammit it's hot.

Dang back injuries. It's always frustrating to have things like that acting up. I wonder of doing some lower back strengthening work would help to prevent flare ups?

I started off today with a 7-mile EZ run ending with 8 X 12-sec hill sprints. I feel like I am adjusting to the Keto diet but still have a ways to go to get where I was before I started it fitness wise. I have noticed a much more stable energy level throughout the day the past 3 days, however. I also resumed my strength training last night. That felt pretty good.

I have a speed workout scheduled for tomorrow which should be pretty telling. 2-Mi warmup; Ladder (1, 2, 3, 2, 1, 2, 3 minute intervals at 1500, 3K, and 5K paces with 1' Recovery intervals); 2-Mi cool down.

That’s a pretty aggressive schedule you’ve been keeping and it looks like you’ve gone from zero to 50 mpw in less than 12 weeks? Impressive. Any injury concerns? What’s been keeping you fresh?

I was running 10 to 20 miles a week between December of last year and June of this year with some weeks more than that. I just wasn't consistent during that time. I started building mileage several times but ran into life (home projects, grandkids being born, travel, etc.) and would miss several days of running in a row and basically have to start from scratch.

I hit the weights pretty hard in January of this year and was very consistent with that into the Spring. I haven't had any injuries so far this year, not even little issues like I used to have (piriformis, Achilles, etc.). I attribute that to heavy Squats and Deadlifts 2X/week. I had done some weight lifting in the past but never this heavy and this frequently, especially my legs.

I have also taken a reduced volume week ever 4-5 weeks this training cycle where I cut my mileage back 30-40%. I almost forgot that I have been doing a small amount of barefoot running for the last 1/4 to 1/2 mile of my easy runs. I got a pair of Merrill Vapor Glove 3s for 30 bucks online in August. I do my barefoot running in those. I think that has probably helped me refine my form some also.

Interesting. I really appreciate you sharing. I’ve considered doing weighted squats for strength but I don’t think I can handle it at my current volume. Air squats and biking for me for now. Cheers.

That's why I resisted it for so long. I've found that I can still do intensity and long runs without issue even when I am pretty sore from my lifting. It was more psychological than anything. Once I get a mile or two in, my legs feel pretty good even after a heavy leg workout 24-48 hours prior. Like everything, you adapt too.

A couple of challenging running days up here in Chicago

Missed you up there by a couple of weeks. I'll be there next week for a vacation and the marathon. Your pics on Strava gave me a nice preview of what to look forward to

HB, are you still in for Chicago?

I don’t think the issue is whether or not I can do it. The issue for me would be general fatigue and over training during race season. I would certainly consider it on the off season but it’s not worth the risk of sacrificing my speed to overuse. Right now I’m pretty primed to put in some very quick times. I really do appreciate the insight.

Pretty sure my spur of the moment decision to do very lightweight squats and deadlifts is the reason I’ve gotten bitten by the injury bug last two weeks...definitely do not do it lol.

That said, anyone fought IT band issues? I’m assuming that’s my latest ailment...getting a dull pain on outside of my right knee and radiating back to my right/upper calf area. I can run through it, but it’s sore after runs and going up/down stairs right after runs hurts a bit. Subsides after 24 hours until I run again.

Got in some good track work this morning.

4x1000 with 400 rec

First day to use my watch and I must have hit "stop" instead of "go" after one of the intervals, I looked down 3/4 of the way through and it was on the home screen

I’m running in a half in December. Concurrent with my half marathon training, I’m also doing a bunch of pushups and chin-ups and working out twice per week. My current workout program is simple: benchpress, 3x5; military Press, 3x5; leg curl, 3x10; leg press, 3x10.

I will not change this workout until after my half in December. However, would switching out the leg press for squats and leg curls for deadlifts slow me down when I train for another half in March? I’d be running 15-24 miles per week.

Well boys as I sit in a Chicago Hospital watching Worlds, I’m pretty sure my predicament trumps all. I had a stroke yesterday am, while running nonetheless. Whole left side went limp, etc. Very scary stuff and I almost didn’t make it.

They are still unsure what caused the clot and still a long road to recovery. Will keep y’all posted.
