I have small kids. I workout in the morning.
The first two weeks M-F sucked nuts. After? Awesome. Getting to go straight home after work having already worked out, it’s the best thing and my fitness goals are being achieved.
Things I didn’t like about myself like this:
Outweigh the feeling of staying in bed when the alarm goes off

The biggest and probably most obvious thing is getting to sleep early. My alarm goes off at 4:30, and if I'm not in bed ready to sleep before 9:30 the night before it's a real struggle.
Other than that just get up and get the preworkout mixed and get going.
I used to hate getting up early before having kids, but now it's the only part of the day I have time to get a run/workout in. I got used to it pretty quickly, as long as I'm still getting enough sleep.

Coach high school cross-country and track and field so this time of year three days a week I have a group of 25 to 30 high school kids who wake up at five to run for me at 6 AM.
If I want to run on those days, my options are getting in my run before them or in the afternoon, and I would much rather wake up at four and have my run finished by six then wake up at five and have it loom over my head, knowing I have to run that afternoon or evening
I admittedly go to bed pretty early every day though. If I see nine or 930 during the week, it’s some sort of special occasion.

Keep doing something, it’s even better if you don’t want to do it. Sooner or later a routine forms and eating breakfast will be the last thing on your mind.

Back to top Question is how do you do it? I have tried for years off and on going all the way back to high school and I just can’t get my body to get up and go.
I've stopped trying.
When I worked remotely I'd get up, have coffee, warm up, etc, but it'd take me a good 2 hours before I was ready to run. I'd get up at 6 or so, be moving by 8:30. That's not realistic for everyone. It's not realistic for me right now.
When I wake up I like to slowly get into the day. I don't get up and start humming. Everyone is different.
If you want to get into shape and you can only really do LISS cardio in the AM, don't do it. Focus on getting steps and then squeeze in a short lift where you can until you're in a position where you can prioritize working out at time that works for your body.
10k steps walking and 10k steps running are essentially the same thing in terms of your overall calorie burn. yes, running is going to have other cardiovascular benefits, and the mental health aspect is a little better, but if you're goal is to drop weight, walking is just as valid and you can often do it at work.

Did a mile and a half this morning. I know it ain’t much but it’s a start. And with my job I’m on my feet most of the day so I get a decent amount of steps in but there is no “down time” to do anything productive workout wise while I’m there

That's awesome, man! Put that Jocko Willink "thinking about the enemy" monolog in playlist to hit you at some point during your workout.
The more you're up earlier than everyone else, putting in work while others are asleep, knocking out the hardest part of the day before the sun comes up, the more of a badass you'll start to feel like.

Failed again this morning
Of course now that I am wide awake and full of caffeine I am regretting not knocking it out. I am good for once or twice a week but would love to just make it an every morning thing, whether I have something going on that evening or not.

I used to hate it and it made me nauseous while working out early morning. After forcing myself to do it over and over, I now prefer it and get my best workouts in the morning. Your body will adapt.

I will say whoever said to drink water beforehand that seems like such a no brainer but I do feel like it curbed my appetite enough just doing that one cup and going. Going to try and do some light lifting tomorrow and see how that goes. Thinking of doing runs 3 days a week and weights 2 for now

Get up, drink some coffee have a banana and go run.
You have to want it, if not just keep sleeping in.

I run after work during the week and always feel heavy and slow. On the weekend, I wake up early and go for a run. The first thing I do is have a bagel and some coffee then shower. Seems like a waste but it wakes me up and gives me the chance to listen to some music. I do some stretching and exercises and eat a Stinger waffle before I walk out the door to start right before sunrise.
But the main thing is I tell myself how grateful I am to have an opportunity to go for a run. I’ve missed plenty of weekends because of an injury and that’s the worst feeling. I actually get excited the night before. Gratitude.

Every morning workout you have right now is a success. What is most important right now is building consistency and establishing a routine.
This early on, you could have some days where you wake up, go to the gym and do almost nothing or walk on a treadmill for a mile. Do cardio, weights, whatever. In the grand scheme of things, the content of one workout does not really matter right now. What’s most important is you are just trying to condition your mind and body to getting up every day and establishing a consistent routine. Volume, strength and performance will come in time. As will figuring out what you type of fitness/exercise you prefer.
