I have been doing Keto for a few months and I am doing a 12 hour hike in California in two days. I am worried not having carbs is going to make this too difficult. Should I break Keto and start carbing up today and tomorrow or is fat enough to sustain? Anyone have experience with long distance cardio on Keto?

If you wanted to do a 12 hr hike with no carbs you would need to carefully pace the hike. I would reccomend wearing a hr monitor if you have one to help pace the hike. It you just want to hike without thinking bring carbs cause bonking sucks.

How has doing keto affected you over the past few months? Do you feel more or less energized? Personally, I don't like the idea of drastically changing your diet so soon before a strenuous event. Your body readjusting to carbs could bog you down more than help.

I feel great. I do 1 hour long workouts during the week (usually half cardio and half weights), but this is obviously much longer. I will have plenty of sugar free trail mix, water, beef jerky etc on the hike.

Do you think eating something like brown rice today and maybe some oatmeal or potatoes tomorrow is a bad idea?

Don't worry about your carbs or heart rate. Just bump a couple of lines before you go. That's my go to pre-workout.

It really just depends on how your body reacts to different foods. Some people will feel physically sick from breaking ketosis, some are relatively unaffected.

Do I think eating some oatmeal or rice is going to ruin your trip? Probably not. But if you're feeling great with your current diet, I'm not sure carbs or no carbs matters a whole lot.

Sorry for the vagueness, but everyone reacts differently to diets, so it's hard to judge.

I'm telling you a 12 hr hike with no carbs is going to be a bad time. You do not want to bonk.

It would kill me if I did it. When I break keto, my stomach gets all fricked up. The last thing you want on a 12 hour hike is to have to shite constantly.

Just bring keto snacks and water and you will be fine.

Agreed, I would stick with status quo but that’s just met. Everybody is different.

Edit: that kinda is the benefit behind Keto anyway, to more or less run off diesel. Slow burning fuel for sustained distances.

Another poster on here ran a half on keto and felt great.

Just eat plenty of protein and fat and you will have all the energy you need.

I’m alive!
I had decided to just stay the course Keto, but we got into the park later than expected and pizza was all that was available. My body has handled past cheats pretty well, so I had three slices the night before the hike and was fine. Honestly, it probably even helped because I had tons of energy the first few hours. Nuts, Jerky and a Keto protein bar were my fuel during the hike and I had no problems.

That being said, 17 miles to 8800ft of elevation was absolutely brutal. One of the hardest things I have ever done and the cables at the top are terrifying. I am proud to say I accomplished it, but I think future hikes will stay under 12 miles.

I did half dome two years ago and pretty sure I stopped and ate pizza exactly where you did at the end. Haha

Anyways, glad to hear you made it. What did you think was the hardest part? Going up or down?

I thought going down was harder. I didn’t have problems with the elevation gain on the way up. My body definitely hit a wall coming down because everything started to hurt. I had decent hiking shoes, but the constant pressure of my toes on the front tip of the shoe started rubbing and hurt like hell. Then the knee pain from scrambling down so many rocks.
How long did it take you a few years ago? I am glad to have completed it but if I ever went again, I think I would camp in little valley at around mile 5.
