I’ve struggled with the same thing. There’s some good suggestions on here. Short of going to psychotherapy, which there’s nothing wrong with at all, but it does cost money and time, the things I’ve found to be most effective are:
1) when I finally feel tired and get in bed, I read for 10-15 minutes. Nothing exciting or stimulating at all. In fact, quite the opposite. Something fairly boring, but it seems to sort of tire my brain out and finally take it over the edge to where I crash hard;
2) melatonin. I still don’t think it’s as good as natural sleep but it’s way better than nothing or sleeping 3 hours per night.
3) As one other poster said, to the extent you can try to get things done during the day that are weighing on your mind, do them. If it’s something you have no control over, try to remember that.
4) Finally, if nothing seems to work, consider seeing a professional. I know it’s expensive, but sleep is important. Really important. And if this has been going on for a while, my guess is you would consider it a good investment once you get out of this rut.

Melatonin (5mg) has really helped my husband. He still wakes up in the middle of the night, but he goes right back to sleep instead of laying there awake for hours.

Do you drink alcohol? That always makes me wake up at 2 with anxiety.

My sleeping issues are related to anxiety. I often wake up with my mind racing, feeling jittery, and unable to fall back asleep in the middle of the night.

How big is your neck? Have you ever been screened for sleep apnea?

I used to have no problem with coffee until a few years ago. Slowly I realized I was always agitated, a lot of times with my kids when I shouldn't have been, mind racing at night, always anxious.

It was the coffee. I don't know why but it came out of nowhere. I would bring a travel mug with me to work finish it by 8 and wouldn't have anymore but it started affecting me big time.

I cut out all caffeine and all my problems went away. I even tried random days of having a small cup first thing but the anxiety and stress always came back.

Maybe just that one cup is getting to you like it did to me.

Just a caution about sleep aides (which I don’t think melatonin qualifies), long term use prevents the brain from self cleaning plaque during REM sleep. Over time, this can greatly increase risk of Alzheimer’s/ Dementia.

CBD oil could help. I like it, but it’s more expensive than I’m willing to pay. I take melatonin gummies instead.

I am in your boat. Like you I have anxiety related insomnia. I got tested for diabetes and thyroid issues but both negative. I thought it could be diet related but I would get insomnia no matter what I did. I've been to 4 doctors in 4 different states and all say its anxiety related. Even if I am anxious about nothing they say it can be passive anxiety, also working out can trigger it too.

I've found that Tylenol PM works best for me. I don't take it every night, just when I feel like I might need it.

I drove to Colorado this past Sunday night for a ski trip this week and got literally zero sleep. None. My fitbit sleep tracker didn't even register anything. Yet I still skied a full day Monday and stayed up to watch a college basketball game. Ive found that even after a night of no sleep, I am not dead tired the next day. I think you can gain some kind of rest by just laying there all night. Also these nights never happen back to back. I know if I get little or no sleep one night, I'll get plenty the next guaranteed.

At the height of my insomnia issues, this never worked for me. Even when I took large doses.

Altitude absolutely destroys my sleeping pattern. Mix in a little alcohol and I am guaranteed 1-2 hours sleep, max, if any. Painful

your issues sound similar to mine except i workout much more than you

my issues started about a month ago

only 1 cup coffee in the morning, no sodas/alcohol/nicotine use

i can easily fall asleep, in bed around 845 and up at 330, but i always wake up at 130 like clockwork and it’ll take me a little bit before falling back asleep

i’ve done the melatonin thing but that hasn’t helped

i’m a morning person but i drag arse around lunchtime to pretty much the rest of the day every day

reading the comments it sounds like my issue revolves around stress which makes sense looking back

You need to reduce the amount of stress, also watch your emotions before going to bed. It could be caused by caffeine during the day, or you ate a lot before going to bed.  Lack of activity during the day could also be the cause.
