I've been "dieting" without a real diet plan. Maybe you guys can make some suggestions

The stats: 5'8" started at 203lbs in December. For activity I used to regularly walk 9-18 holes of golf several times a week but since I stopped golfing last year because of my knee I really ballooned in weight. No set workout routine. I have gotten back into mountain biking and bike a couple of times a week usually for 1-2 hours as I build my cardio and body back up to cycling shape. I've always been in the 185 range through my 30's and 40's. My first target was to get back to 185 then hopefully even less. Turning 45 next month.

Dad bod at 43@185

I've always had horrible eating habits and have always ate whatever I wanted and however much I wanted. First thing I decided to do which I started in late December was to try to start eating better. I have no real dietary targets. Main things I have done is:

1. Change my eating habits. I don't eat a breakfast/lunch any more. Since I work from home full time now and no longer have a lunch time I tend to graze during the day. I wake up with black coffee and sipping on that normally keeps my body content until about 1030-11. From there I'll just start eating small 100-200 calorie "snacks" as I get hungry during the day. Since it's just me eating during this time it's almost always Carb free. Lots of Tuna. Chicken breasts. Salmon. Salads. Omeletts. Nuts. Is it possible to eat too much Tuna? I tend to eat at least one portion of Tuna a day. I get a lot of the pre-seasoned Tuna packets and stick them on a crunchy lettuce wrap with some Pico.

I also really like the Starkist Tuna creations microwave pouches, about 160-170cal a pouch.

2-3 "meals" like this will keep me content through the work day. So 400-600 calories.
I've found since my body has gotten used to these more frequent smaller meals over the last month it takes a lot less food to get my to feel "full" than it used too.

For dinner I will normally eat what I want but I try to limit my portion size.

2. Eliminate carbs and sugars as much as possible. Meaning breads, sugars, pastas, rice, etc. I cut out sugar drinks a long time ago (except sweet tea) but now eliminated sweet tea and sugar in my coffee. I'm no Keto or Zero carb. If we make a family dinner that has pasta or rice I will eat the pasta or rice, I just try to really limit how much of it I eat. If I have a long bike ride planned I will let myself splurge on carbs.

What I don't know is if I have been doing a healthy approach to dieting. I don't really know much about dieting I just sort of did #1 and #2 probably based on click bait headlines I remember reading a long time ago and every diet seems to cut out carbs. This morning I weighed myself at 190lbs. So in 5 weeks I've lost about 13 lbs. I haven't measured myself but some pants I put on yesterday were quite a bit looser than they were last month. What I've been doing seems to be working with minimal effort. But am I doing this in a healthy way? I never started with a caloric goal in mind but once I started adding it up I've been running on pretty low calorie intake. Is this healthy to do? Will it somehow screw up my metabolism? What about eating too much Tuna or Salmon? If I'm running a calory deficit do I really need to cut carbs? Fasting until 1030-11 every day is that good or bad? You guys seem very knowledgeable on all things diet and health. Maybe you can point out what I've been doing right and if there is anything I am doing wrong or could improve upon with y "diet"

Seems like what you are doing is working. Don't let some jackhole here try and fix your diet.

Once you stall for 2+ weeks then you can come back.

2 lbs a week is a good pace. What you’re doing is working.

I would eat a little more red meat, homemade burger patties or steaks just for the iron.

So what should I be tracking?

Not right now. I don't mind the dad-bod. The main goal I think is more to get rid of some unhealthy weight. The only real workout is on the bike. One sometimes two high intensity rides during the week and one long 2+ hour ride on the weekends.

Haven't thought about my iron/red meat intake. I'll be sure to throw in some red meat during the week.

just roughly what you are eating in myfitnesspal. I mean you do work from home so i would suggest just weighing and tracking everything.

Just keep doing what you are doing, bro. It is obviously working. The idea is to change the way you eat into a way that is healthy, but also not make yourself miserable in the process. If you can enjoy eating healthy meals, you are much more likely to stick to the healthy eating life style.

That would be the only thing I thought of to suggest. I see you like lettuce wraps.. do what you are doing with the tuna but with low fat ground beef

Tuna has a lot of mercury in it. You can substitute with canned or grilled chicken. Otherwise you are doing great. May want to incorporate some light weight high rep to it to rid yourself of Dad bod.

Found some frozen mesquite grilled chicken breasts at Sam's that heat up quick and are pretty good. Will start subbing in some ground beef and more chicken in my diet. I also love the Boar's Head London broil from Publix. Should work well on a salad or a wrap (though it does have a good bit of sodiium per serving). Thanks.

Good information everyone. Really appreciate the feedback.

since you work from home this really applies, but a sous vide and vacuum sealer can be a life saver. Simply protion the chicken(or any meat, just look up the recipes) out, place some seasoning in a bag with it and seal. you can keep them in the fridge or freezer and then you drop them in the water at the correct temperature.

Works great for chicken as you can drop in for an hour, but if you get caught up, you can leave it up to 4 without it overcooking or changing the texture.

also with lettuce wraps, salsa or buffalo sauce in the slower cooker with chicken is fricking money.

just keep doing what you are doing though overall you are doing great.

I would suggest starting to do pushups and chin ups so you can get some kind of strength workout in.

Checked this morning. Down to 184 so another 6lbs last month. Honestly doesn't feel like dieting any more just lifestyle change. I have made alterations on what I've been doing slightly. I was trying to be as Keto as possible but not religiously so. Seems like I would lose weight quickly while on 5-6 days of Ketogenisis (sp?) but one cheat or slipup and my weight would rubber band back on a couple of lbs. Now I just stay low carb not completely avoid carbs but limit them. No more weight fluctuations and just a slow gradual weight loss. I'll eat rice or pasta but I will do so with very small portions. I had cake a couple of times. Fast food a couple of times. I'll try to make smart choices at fast food places and limit my portion sizes of the really bad stuff. Doing it this way the weight doesn't shed as quickly, ~1.5lbs a week but it's way easier to maintain and doesn't "feel" like a very harsh or strict diet. Pretty easy to go through the day with ~3-4 small meals around 100-200 calories each leaving me 900+ calories for a nice satisfying dinner.

How much alcohol (beer, wined, liquor) are you drinking?

If you haven't limited that aspect of your diet then that could be an add on.

Like everyone else said; you're on a great pace.
