Is it a good idea to skip a day when working the same muscle groups?

Not maxing out just multiple reps at lower weight.

The best workout is the one you can recover from. If your goal is strength/hypertrophy, yes, I would not work the same muscle group on back to back days.

It depends on the muscles. Large muscles take longer to recover. You can work abs out every day and muscles like calves and biceps 3-4 days a week with no problem.

I’d include side and rear delts in there too. I can work them just about everyday whereas calves I can only do twice a week max. Based on my personal recovery times:
Quads/hamstrings/glutes 1-2x
Chest/triceps/calves/lats 2x
Biceps/abs/delts 3x+
Quads/hamstrings/glutes 1-2x
Chest/triceps/calves/lats 2x
Biceps/abs/delts 3x+

A ton of us naturals did squats every day for Squatober with minimal soreness. Loved it, in fact. I think it depends on the programming. You can’t go balls to the wall every day on the same muscle group, but you can get some work in.

I even did the squatober prep before squatober. Never had an issue.
I’ve done programs like smolov Jr that made my knees sore as hell.
