I’m sure there are plenty of posts on this...but couldn’t find exactly what I was looking for.
Thinking about starting this (I rarely eat breakfast as it is anyway).
My question...if I want to do int fast, can I have 1 tsp of raw sugar in my coffee (20 calories/tsp)? I usually drink 2 cups of coffee in the AM with no creamer, just a little bit of raw sugar in it. Then I’ll usually eat an alto if or 2 while on the road (I’m assuming that would have to be cut out.

Any advice/knowledge on this is appreciated. Thanks!

Just bite the bullet and learn to drink black coffee.

I figured that reply was coming.
Still looking for the answer (or at least educated guess) on my original question.

I would switch to Stevia to eliminate most of the carbs as well. It takes 2 days to get accustom to over sugar.

No calories are to be ingested during the fasted phase, though coffee, calorie free sweeteners, diet soda and sugar free gum are ok (even though they might contain trace amount of calories). A tiny splash of milk in your coffee won’t affect anything either (½-1 teaspoon of milk per cup at the most – use sparingly and sensibly if you drink a lot of coffee). Neither will sugar free gum in moderation (~20 g).

switch to something other than raw sugar. You aren't fasting if you are using the sugar.

Anything other than water will break a fast. Anything, meaning 100% of anything that the body is forced to metabolize breaks a fast.

Real dumb question. Being that black coffee is technically only water...would black coffee break the fast?

Looks like there’s some disagreement to this...

Listen to the Joe Rogan podcast with Dr. Rhonda Patrick...

LINK

They start talking about fasting around 2:27:30 and they go into coffee at around 2:34:30. For anyone who wants to skip to those parts.

Time Restricted Eating

Here's a link to the part of the podcast where they discuss time restricted eating (I.F.). Dr. Patrick is of the belief that you should not consume anything but water during fasting windows.

ETA: if you have time. All of the JRE Podcasts with Dr. Rhonda Patrick are gold!

According to everything that I have read, yes. Once you consume any calories, some of the benefits disappear. However, you should still be able to receive some solid blood sugar regulation with only 40 calories / 10g carbs over your entire 16 hour fast. That is still hugely beneficial for most people. Rhonda Patrick did a recent podcast on TRE/IF that you might find interesting. Found My Fitness Podcast

Awesome! Kind of what I was looking for. While it’s not perfect...is there some benefit to it even if I’m having coffee? Or am I completely diminishing the entire process by having coffee.

Finishing up the JRE pod with her now and then I’ll check the FMF pod. Thanks!

I’m a big believer in Rhonda Patrick, however I drink espresso at 6am and don’t eat until noon. I do it black though. It works for me, keeps me leaner and increases my endurance. But the main reason I do it is to leave my digestive system alone for 16hr/day. The espresso actually empties me out so in a way I feel like it makes the fast more effective, but I do believe Dr Patrick, but at the same time do what works for me. I don’t put anything in the coffeee though, as I think even sweetener would trigger more of a relapse from the fast.

So there are a lot of benifits from IF. if you are looking for all of the health benifits, don't drink anything.

if you are just looking for the caloric control and body composition and health benifits that come from that, keep on having the coffee.

But would still be better if you switched to zero calorie or just black coffee. Don't overthink it if you are just using the fasting to lose weight.

Joined a new gym.
I’m 15lbs heavier than I’d like to be.
Want to add some definition and lose said pounds at the same time.
Figured some version of IF would help speed up that process.
Plus, I travel constantly for work. Not always great options on the road. So I was thinking IF could also help to “combat” some of that as well.

I think Rhonda covers this in the podcast. I know there are some out there that believe the possible increase in cortisol and the associated rise in blood sugar negate the effects of the fast, the vast majority of people that cover the topic seem to say non caloric beverages are fine. This includes coffee. I guess you could always roll with decaf black coffee just to be safe?
