start out with a trap bar if you have access to one.
I'd look at the trap bar as a fundamentally different movement to train.
Everything from position, loading and bracing is different trap bar to straight bar. That doesn't mean a trap bar is bad, but that it's more a standalone lift and less a tool to learn straight bar deadlifts.
If you're looking to teach progressions for straight bar for people who need to build flexibility, do block pulls. If you have the flexibility, I'd train off the floor with a focus on light weights and good positioning. Maybe work some paused deadlifts to reinforce positioning when breaking the floor.
Or you could just do trap bar deads as a main movement. It's a valid option for anyone if you don't care about powerlifting.

Alan Thrall also has a very good deadlift video, I'll link it when I get a chance.

If your gym has a trap bar, use it.
This. Trap bars take a lot of thinking out of the equation and imo is a lot less stressful on your lower back/spine erectors
I’d say use the trap bar to build up core strength and perfect your form. Then move on to the barbell
Also, people here will recommend deadlifting very low reps and only once a week but if you’re using a lighter weight you can raise the volume and frequency

Thanks folks. I just couldn’t figure it out on the spot. Maybe just too sore to try lol.
I can promise you I wouldn’t be doing it if not for greyskull.

I find deadlift to be really easy now. Practice and in 3 months you’ll be killing it. The cues in this thread are spot on.

I invariably strain my left hamstring when I DL. I stopped doing them for the most part. When I do it's variations like the Jefferson.
