had 1-2 pints of Guinness most nights before and more on weekends. Hundreds of calories a day I don’t take in anymore

So what is your nightcap, was the Guinness replaced by a light beer or a healthier spirit like a mezcal?

I’ve essentially quit drinking compared to before. Have a few on the weekends but zero during the week. Still enjoy Guinness when I do have one. I’m a sucker for bourbon / coke too.

You and I are on the same point of the same path, roughly the same weight too, I was a little bigger though. Started in august at 257 or so and am down to 216. It’s funny to think that to have a normal weight according to BMI chart I need to lose another 30+ pounds but obviously BMI doesn’t take into account body fat. Congrats OP keep going!

You lost 30 lbs in months? Aside from abstaining from alcohol, what did you do?

The wife was tired of the extra Covid weight. We took it a little far with drinking. Pretty much every afternoon around 3 I’d open my first IPA. So a bunch of her friends were doing the Optavia diet program. She started that and I joined her a short while later. The first week or so was rough. It’s all these food bars and powdered stuff you mix with water to make shakes or smoothies or little snacks with. Soups, mashed potatoes, pancakes etc. Five of those each day and a lean meal for dinner. Mostly cooked chicken breasts and had that over a salad.

I did it according to the directions for about a month. Then started adding in more real foods. Greek yogurt and either blueberries or granola for breakfast. Boiled eggs and some deli meat for lunch. I was trying to add back in more protein since I had started exercising at that point. I knew going into it that it wasn’t something meant to be a long term deal, but it was a good kickstart to getting my weight under control.

Big congratulations to ShoeBang for a huge achievement. It's also great to see you are keeping up with a calorie-burning activity that you enjoy. That really helps. Keep it up!

I was there about 5 years ago. Somewhere between 245-250lbs, very little exercise, no thoughts at all eating healthy. I had been heavy since high school but living in Louisiana for six years really ramped up my unhealthy habits with food and alcohol. I started running, created an 1,800 daily caloric intake goal, and in an year and a half I was under 190lbs. I even got down to 182lbs for a hot second before a two-week vacation brought me back into the 190s. Even in the early stages of pandemic lockdown I was doing well staying under 200lbs.

Just last week I weighed in at 218. I'd stopped tracking food for a good 6+ months and stopped running due to my first gout flare up. In a week of being back at 1,800/day with only two days of running I dropped over 5lbs of bloat and my work clothes don't fit nearly as tight. My goal is to be under 205 by the end of May & stay under that through the summer. I'd really like to be somewhere comfortable in the 190s by the start of Fall. I know it can be done.

Feel like a new man! I’m 5’8 and 47. I woke up last Labor Day at a disgusting 260 lbs. I’ve been in decent shape in the past and know all the right things to do but a pretty major depression with a side of Covid was a disaster.

I decided I wanted to live to see my boys grow up. I’m down 75 lbs as of today. I typically eat OMAD. Cut out processed foods and got off my arse. My A1C was 7.9. Down to 5.2 now.

I avoid sugar for the most part but do indulge time to time. The first few months I was pretty much keto but my weight loss did not slow when I added carbs back in.

Anecdotal evidence that it really is as simple as calories in versus calories out.

Rowing has helped my heart and general fitness and lifting helped me from losing more muscle mass than necessary. Got me off anxiety meds.

For me the exercise is crucial because I know how hard I have to work to burn those Oreos I crave when my kids are scarfing them down.

I’d like to lose 10 more lbs of fat and start putting on more muscle.

Sorry to hijack. Keep on cranking. It’s not a diet. It’s a new way of life that is rewarding mentally, emotionally, and spiritually every bit as much as physically.

Keep it up. Forever!

Not anecdotal, it really is that simple. I don’t understand how people will go through the trouble of tracking carbs but won’t track calories, which is all that really matters.
