165 lbs.
5’10”
I’d guess somewhere around 18% body fat but it’s all in gut because I’m super prone to skinny fat.
Bench at 210 for reference.

I’ve been gaining decent muscle but gaining fat because I’ve been eating a butt-ton.

Trip is August 19th.
I’d like to keep gaining, one because it’s finally working and two because it’s freakin awesome.

I’ve read that to properly cut, first I need to spend 4-6 weeks in the maintenance phase because cutting too fast can shed muscle and that has happened to me in the past.

When should I start maintenance and how long should I cut?

Why bulk and cut? Why not just eat more protein with a slight deficit? You’ll add muscle and cut at the same time. I don’t understand starving yourself on a cut. As soon as the cut is over you’re going to be bulky looking again.

If it was me, I’d start now and just dial your diet in so you aren’t starving yourself for a month.

I need a surplus to add muscle. I don’t have enough stored fat calories to add muscle in a deficit or maintenance.
And to clarify, when I say “cut” I mean a 500 calorie deficit. No way will I starve myself. That crashes your metabolism and you gain all the weight back in record time. Done that too.

Sorry, baw, didn’t read your post close enough. It’s a tough question because you don’t know how much muscle you’ll gain over the next couple months. I’d say two months out evaluate the situation and back into your macros accordingly.

This is a weird situation cause at 5’10” 165 I’d normally say “maintain” but at 18% bf I’d say “cut 500 cal/day”

At 5’10” 165lbs, how much do you really need to cut? Maybe 5 lbs?

Not sure. My chest pump after chest day looks awesome but goes back pretty flabby after. I’d really like to trim fat around chest and midsection. Probably around 10 pounds.

That helps. Thanks! A pound a week at -500 deficit would be 10 weeks. Tack on the maintenance phase and I can subtract that total from the start of the trip.

I wpuld start now by adding more cardio and a slight caloric deficit. Continue to lift. You likely don't need to lose more than 5-8lb Of fat

He makes me feel fat. I'm the same height, but I weigh 20 lbs. more than him.

Doesn’t sound like he’s got too much muscle. I’m shorter and weigh 20lbs more but I’m at 11/12% bf.

Would it be possible for you to gain 35 lbs of muscle instead? You know what they say about 200 lbs and all…

Agreed.

But I was a twig to begin with but had a MASSIVE gut and neck.
184 lbs with 12-13” arms.
Legs look like a chicken.
Added significantly to arms (15.5”) and legs.

Lift heavy.

Eat protein and fruit 3x per day, and toss in 2 low cal protein shakes mid AM and PM.

Don't do any cardio.

Nevermind. I don’t want to start a debate between lifting heavy and hypertrophy. We’ve covered that plenty on this board.

If you’ve got a pot belly cutting isn’t the way to go. Just going to make your pot belly smaller - not go
away.

What else would make it go away other than losing fat?

If you’re already having issues with being “skinny fat,” then cutting won’t help at all.

Skinny fat isn’t a thing by the way. It’s just a descriptive term for a physique that doesn’t have much muscle.

There aren’t any shortcuts. At 5’10 165 and a 210 bench, I’d say you need to build more strength and gain a little weight. Then cut.

5’10 175 with a 275 bench is going to be a hell of lot better looking than 5’10 155 with a 210 bench.
